Nashua, Manchester modify spectator rules at games after fight

Two counties in New Hampshire are restricting who can watch some sporting events after a fight outside of a basketball game between Manchester Memorial High School and Nashua North on Tuesday night. Now only certain fans will be allowed into the games scheduled for next week. “It makes you feel helpless as a parent when you think anything can happen at any time,” said Alex Comeau, parent and Nashua Alderman. It was strictly family in the stands at Thursday afternoon’s North Souhegan vs. Manchester ice hockey game after changes to fan rules at sporting events. “We’re being overly cautious while it’s being investigated further and that’s sort of settled,” said Lisa Gingras, Nashua’s athletic director for the school. Manchester and Nashua only allow immediate family members to the games. Nashua said children and students must be accompanied by an adult. “We have a lot of families who don’t have parents at home, we have a lot of divorced families, so we wanted to make sure that immediate family members who wanted to come to the game could come to the game,” said Gingras, the superintendent of schools in Manchester sent a note to families saying: “We will N We will not tolerate acts of violence by or against our students and we are taking immediate action to ensure student athletes are safe to compete. “If the students involved in this incident are identified, there are some severe penalties,” Comeau said. “I’d like to think that suspensions and expulsions are on the table.” Manchester said its policy will remain in effect for the remainder of the winter sports season, while Nashua’s will last for at least the next few games, Manchester schools and police departments and Nashua investigate Tuesday night’s fight.

At the North Souhegan vs. Manchester ice hockey game on Thursday afternoon, it was all family in the stands after the fan rules at sporting events changed.

“We have a lot of families that aren’t mom and dad at home, we have a lot of divorced families, so we wanted to make sure immediate family members who wanted to come to the game could come to the game,” Gingras said.

The Superintendent of Schools in Manchester sent a note to families saying: “We will not tolerate or target acts of violence from our students and we are taking immediate action to ensure student athletes are able to compete safely. ”

Comeau said he wanted to see more done.

“If the students involved in this incident are identified, there are some severe penalties,” Comeau said. “I’d like to think suspensions and expulsions are on the table.”

Manchester said its policy will remain in effect for the remainder of the winter sports season, while Nashua’s will apply for at least the next few games.

Manchester and Nashua schools and police departments are investigating Tuesday night’s fight.
