NBA All-Star 2023: Why Nuggets’ Michael Malone, Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla are coaching Team LeBron, Team Giannis
The Nuggets and Celtics will be well represented at the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.
Nikola Jokic, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown not only received All-Star selections, but Nuggets head coach Michael Malone and Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla earned the honor of coaching this year’s biggest stars.
Malone has grazed on the sidelines for the Nuggets since 2015-16. Mazzulla joined the Boston coaching staff as an assistant in 2019 but replaced Ime Udoka as head coach after Udoka was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season.
Despite proving to be two of the best coaches in the NBA, why were Malone and Mazzulla chosen as coaches for the All-Star Game?

Why Nuggets’ Michael Malone and Celtics’ Joe Mazzulla coach the All-Star Game
The head coaches for the All-Star Game will be selected two weeks prior to the game based on the teams with the best records in each conference.
This season, that date fell on Sunday, February 5th.
At the time, the Celtics were atop the Eastern Conference standings with a 37-16 record, earning Mazzulla and his staff the opportunity to coach Team Giannis in the 2023 NBA All-Star Game.
The Nuggets had the best record in the Western Conference at 37-17, which earned Malone and his staff an opportunity to coach Team LeBron.
This is Malone’s second coaching in the All-Star Game. He coached Team LeBron to defeat Team Giannis in the 2019 All-Star Game.
It will be Mazzulla’s first time in charge of the All-Star Game.

We know which players will play in the All-Star Game this season. What to determine is which team they are on.
Again, the two captains will select this year’s teams in a draft, only this time it will take place right before the game. Malone will coach Team LeBron while Mazzulla will coach Team Giannis.
There is a possibility of Malone training against Jokic and Mazzulla training against Tatum and/or Brown depending on who LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo pick.
