Newmarket Saturday review and free video replays

A look back at Saturday’s meeting in Newmarket where Frankie Dettori and Mums Tipple struck.

Tipple team greets Dettori

There was no hiding the joy on the faces of owners Marian Lyons and Patricia Zanelli, who were quick to declare their love for Frankie Dettori once he took the wheel Mama Tipple to a first win in 17 months in JenningsBet The UK’s Leading Bookmaker Handicap.

Without a win to his name since securing list honors at the Lady Wulfruna Stakes in Wolverhampton last March, the five-year-old gelding broke the six-mile sprint record to complete a one-two for trainer Richard Hannon .

The 2/1 community favorite, prominent throughout, gradually pulled away before taking a three-length lead under the popular Italian, who treated the crowd to one of his flying dismounts after the win.

Marian Lyons, co-owner, said: “It took him a long time to get back into shape but it was worth the weight. Well done to the Hannon team. We love Frankie Dettori. He promised to buy us a bottle of champagne, but I think we’ll buy him one. That win in York (2019) was a real highlight of the season but he crashed and got injured and he never got back to the same level.

“He was starting to dislike coming off the floor, but last time he was fourth at Goodwood and having Frankie there helped today. He enjoyed being close to the front lines and six stadia is the journey he likes.”

The classic winner leader Hannon initiated his double pack memewho is a full sister to two-time Group 2 winner Mehmas, finished just below Jamie Spencer at the JenningsBet Fillies’ Nursery.

Dead heat drama

In between, a dead heat was declared Canterbury Bell (5/2) and Total lockdown (7/2) after the JenningsBet handicap but it was a result the latter’s owner Roberto Favarulo was happy to take with him as it was the first winner he had ever bred.

The win provided the final leg of a double for jockey James Doyle, who was aboard the William Haggas-trained Canterbury Bell.

Favarulo said of the three-year-old trained by John Butler: “I had a mare called Diamondsaretrumps and everyone told me she was a morning glory. I wanted to breed with her and everyone told me not to, but I went with my gut and did it.

“I think when you breed them, it means a lot more. It pulls your heart fibers. It was a dead heat, but it’s still a winner. I’m so happy.”

The patient approach works with Strike

Adopting a patient approach proved to be a worthwhile tactic for connections from Hit who opened his account on demand for the 12th time as he fulfilled his season plan with a stubborn win in the JenningsBet Gray Horse Handicap.

The Lethal Force gelding son was finally able to put himself in the lead after a string of respectable losses as he defeated a late duel in the six-furlong competition with his 11/4 favorite Verreaux Eagle before giving in with a nose.

After the race, Simon Emmet, who owns the four-year-old with his daughter Rosalind, was quick to heap praise on winning trainer Johnathan Portman after setting the unique race as Strike’s primary goal.

Emmet said: “It’s been his plan all year. He was very patient and he’s such a playhorse. There is no bad bone in his body. Maybe we’ll come back next year as he seemed to love the track. He likes an uphill finish as he’s run well at Ascot and Salisbury before and really liked it here too and that made a big difference. He is so wild that the whole stable loves him. He’s such a nice horse.”

The win also put a smile on the face of winning driver Rob Hornby, who missed out on Single’s win earlier on the map after getting stuck in traffic.

Hornby said: “I got pounded by traffic everywhere. Good old Johnny, he saved the day once again. It’s always nice to ride him as a winner, especially for these owners who are lovely people. He is honest and tries. It was a good race that Johnny picked.

“He was light weight today, which worked out well. He hit that rising ground and fought it well. He was always trying and running for me and hitting the line and hitting the uphill well. I am delighted. Johnny always tries to plan something for it and the plan paid off. Full credit to the team as it is a good performance all round.”

Appleby continues to dominate

Charlie Appleby continued his dominance of youth racing at the circuit thereafter mischief magic set up an outing at group race level with an easy win in the JenningsBet British EBF Novice Stakes.

After finishing both biennials at the track on Friday, the Godolphin handler saw another lead after the victory of the son of Exceed And Excel, who underpinned his recent success at Goodwood in the six furlong event.

The 2/11 favorite, who barely had to step out of second gear, finished in a few steps to defeat Strawberry Belle by six and a half lengths, resulting in Paddy Power trimming him at 12/1 for Group One stakes in Juddmonte Middle Park.

Appleby said off the track: “I’m happy with the result there as the ground would have been fast enough for him. Something like Mill Reef would be a possible target for him with slightly better ground, or maybe the Sirenia Stakes at Kempton Park would also be an option.”

Single shines for Channon

Traffic problems may have prevented Hornby from boarding his inaugural drive Single, But there were no such problems on the track for the Mick Channon-trained five-year-old, who was one better at the JenningsBet Fillies’ Handicap than 12 months ago.

After being second best to Eileendover in last year’s mile six competition, the daughter of Nathaniel was undeniable on this occasion under capable surrogate Franny Norton, having eclipsed her rivals by the time she was two and a half to score lengths .

Jack Channon, son and assistant trainer, said: “She’s a very nice filly and she’s talented but she thinks about it when she finishes up front. Franny said he thought he was going to win by 10 lengths, but then she moved forward when she hit the front, and she’s done that her entire career.

“We’ve tried all sorts of things like headgear but it doesn’t seem to work as she doesn’t quite settle into the race. It’s a tricky ride and Franny pulled it off perfectly the first time. You have to land them there very late. When she gets the pace she needs and the fast ground she’s quite a nice filly. All her form is there and she’s a decent stayer so she deserves this decent pot.”
