NFL free agents 2023: Best players still available at each position, including Ezekiel Elliott, Odell Beckham Jr. & Bobby Wagner

The free NFL agency had many inexpensive players available. But after a busy first few days, with teams from across the league signing top- and mid-tier free agents and making a handful of trades, there’s limited help in the open market.
When teams reassess where they stand in terms of salary and cap and their upcoming position target plans for the draft, they can determine where else they need to spend money to fill in gaps.
From a handful of Impact starters to plenty of roleplayers, here’s a look at the top unsigned veterans:
NFL FREE AGENCY 2023: Track all top 60 signings
NFL Free Agents 2023: The best remaining players in each position
quarterbacks
- Carson Wentz, Commanders
- Teddy Bridgewater, Dolphins
- Matt Ryan, Colts
- Cooper Rush, Cowboys
- Mason Rudolph, Steelers
There is only backup material here compared to real bridge solutions for teams. Wentz and Ryan hit a wall with their tenure with the Colts. Bridgewater was passed in Miami for Mike White. Rush could still come back behind Dak Prescott in Dallas.
run back
- Devin Singletary, Bills
- Damien Harris, Patriots
- Ezekiel Elliott, Cowboys
- Kareem Hunt, Browns
- Leonard Fournette, privateer
- D’Ernest Johnson, Browns
- Darrel Williams, Cardinals
- Kenyan drakes, ravens
- Jerick McKinnon, Chiefs
- Dontrell Hilliard, Titans
- Ronald Jones II, bosses
- Royce Freeman, Texan
- Giovani Bernard, privateer
- Latavius Murray, Broncos
- Jonathan Williams, Commanders
Elliott is the biggest name here, but given his status as an aging limited power back, Singletary and Harris make for younger, fresher legs in this department.
Nick Chubb needs a new backup with Hunt and Johnson not signed by Cleveland. As an accomplished pass protection and pass catching specialist, Fournette needs to switch to a winning team.
wide receiver
- DJ Char, Lions
- Adam Thielen, Vikings
- Mecole Hardman, Chiefs
- Richie James, Giants
- Julio Jones, privateer
- Marvin Jones Jr., Jaguars
- Demarcus Robinson, Ravens
- DeAndre Carter, Chargers
- Mack Hollins, Raiders
- Jarvis Landry, Saints
- Odell Beckham Jr., St
- Trent Sherfield, Dolphins
- Byron Pringle, Bears
- Chris Moore, Texan
- Nelson Agholor, Patriots
- Randall Cobb, Packer
- Marquise Goodwin, Seahawks
- Marquez Callaway, Saints
Chark has been attracting some attention from the Giants and other teams lately, as a former Jaguars #1 Thielen can still serve well as a big slot with good hands and Red Zone skills.
Between the near-retired quartet of Jones, Jones, Landry and Beckham, OBJ still has the greatest appeal — if he can snap up a cheap one-year deal for under $10 million and accept that he’s more of a big-play supplement -No. 2.
tight ends
- Dalton Schultz, Cowboys
- Irv Smith, Vikings
- Austin Hooper, Titans
- Dan Arnold, Jaguars
- MyCole Pruitt, Falcons
- Jordan Akins, Texan
- Geoff Swaim, Titans
- Drawn sample, Bengal
Schultz was being considered by the Chargers for a reunion with Kellen Moore to replace Gerald Everett to help out Justin Herbert.
Offensive duels
- Donovan Smith, privateer
- Taylor Lewan, Titans
- George Fant, Jets
- Cameron Erving, Panthers
- Jermaine Eluemenor, Raiders
- Cameron Fleming, Broncos
- Ty Nsekhe, Rams
- Josh Wells, Buccaneer
- Eric Fisher, Dolphins
Smith was for Tampa Bay Fading versus Tristan Wirfs and therefore the market was lukewarm. Lewan is older with the durability issues to believe he might stop playing. This well is rather dry after the versatile athlete Fant.
Guards/Centers
- Isaac Seumalo, Adler
- Connor McGovern, Jets
- Elijah Wilkinson, Falcons
- Michael Schofield, Bears
- Max Scharping, Bengal
- Jon Feliciano, Giants
- Oday Aboushi, Rams
- Ben Jones, Titans
- Gabe Jackson, Seahawks
- Will Clapp, chargers
Seumalo is likely to be priced for Philadelphia as Jason Kelce re-signs for a year and Cam Jurgens awaits his chance to play an inside role. McGovern is better than the player of the same name who moved from the Cowboys to the Bills, but he’s confined to the middle. Otherwise, this list includes some plug-and-play launchers and Swing backups.
Edge rusher
- Jadeveon Clowney, Browns
- Calais Campbell, Ravens
- Bud Dupree, Titans
- Justin Houston, Ravens
- Leonard Floyd, Rams
- Melvin Ingram, Dolphins
- Dawuane Smoot, Jaguars
- Carl Nassib, privateer
- Carlos Dunlap, bosses
- Dante Fowler Jr., Cowboys
Clowney is still strong against the run, but his stamina and age (he turned 30 in February) are factors causing him to slow down, one reason Cleveland held on over Myles Garrett. Campbell could end up back with the Ravens. Dupree could end up bringing depth back to the Steelers, the team that drafted him.
Defensive tackles
- Chris Wormley, Steelers
- Khyiris Tonga, Vikings
- Shelby Harris, Seahawks
- Matt Ioannidis, Panthers
- Dean Lowry, Packers
- Akiem Hicks, privateer
- Ndamukong Suh, Eagle
The pass rushers inside were paid in a hurry, including the Seahawks upgrade from Harris (acquired in a trade from Russell Wilson) with fellow former Bronco Dre’Mont Jones. These are mainly rotation stop bodies. Hiccup and Suh may have finally aged.
linebacker
- Bobby Wagner, Rams
- Drue Tranquill, Chargers
- Denzel Perryman, Raiders
- Zach Cunningham, Titans
- Kwon Alexander, Jets
- Kyle Van Noy, Chargers
- Cory Littleton, Panthers
- Anthony Barr, Cowboys
- Damien Wilson, Panthers
Most of the best off-ball producers here got their big deals early. Wagner should get more attention given how well he transitioned from the Seahawks to the Rams last season. Tranquill should soon get a chance to play outside of Los Angeles. Perryman is also a solid starter who has done well for multiple teams.
cornerbacks
- Anthony Brown, Cowboys
- Marcus Peters, Ravens
- Bryce Callahan, Chargers
- Antonio Hamilton, Cardinals
- Troy Hill, Rams
- Rock Ya-Sin, Raiders
- Chandon Sullivan, Vikings
- Mike Hughes, Lions
- Eli Apple, Bengal
- Shaquill Griffin, Jaguars
- Tre Herndon, Jaguars
The Cowboys rose from Brown to Stephon Gilmore. Peters is a boom-or-bust veteran while Callahan is relegated to the slots service. The rest are depth players at this point.
collateral
- Taylor Rapp, Rams
- CJ Gardner-Johnson, Eagles
- Rodney McLeod, Saints
- Adrian Amos, Packers
- Julian Love, Giants
- Chris Banjo, Cardinals
- Duron Harmon, Hunter
- Terrell Edmunds, Steelers
- Andrew Adams, Titans
- Logan Ryan, privateer
Rapp knocked on the door to be special last season and would be a steal for any team — which is why the Patriots are keen for him to replace retired Devin McCourty. The Eagles are scrambling to hold Johnson, but another team could charge in just like they stole him from the Saints. Amos and Love still offer nice early potential.
table football
- Robbie Gould, 49ers
- Brett Maher, Cowboys
- Joey Slye, Commanders
- Mason Crosby, Packer
- Randy Bullock, Titans
Gould was to return to San Francisco to remain her money man. Maher injured himself with all those clutch time mistakes.
punters
- Riley Dixon, Rams
- JK Scott, Chargers
- Jake Bailey, Patriots
- Matt Haack, Colts
- Andy Lee, Cardinals
- Thomas Morstead, Dolphins
Dixon and Scott should be valuable to LA teams and could still come back. The Patriots thought they could do better than Bailey. Lee is 40 and Morstead is 37 so wouldn’t be surprised if both left the game.
