ROBIN Carpenter from North Yorkshire is living proof that top athletic performance is possible at any age.

The Helmsley octogenarian, just 89, has just helped Helmsley Bowls Club lift a silver medal at the prestigious Waltham Cup in Ryedale.

And what makes his contribution so special is that Robin has lifted the trophy before – in 1980 when he was just 47 years old.

“It was maybe a longer wait than I expected,” says Robin, one of the 8-man team that defeated Thirsk in a close final at Kirkbymoorside.

Robin’s win in 1980 wasn’t his first taste of bowling glory either.

On the walls of Helmsley’s club pavilion, the earlier winner’s plaque shows that he was city singles champion eighteen years earlier in 1962, exactly 60 years before that most recent triumph.

“I started playing when I was 29,” adds Robin. “Man and boy. And I’m still learning.”

And Robin isn’t done yet. By far not.

“He’s playing better than ever,” said club secretary Jan Laker. “I think the coverage of the Commonwealth Games has shown people what a fascinating and really exciting game this is, whether you’re 18 or 80 and at 90 Robin still loves it, our youngest recruits to watch and take on, some of whom weren’t even alive when he started winning titles.”

This week he took part again alongside rising star Helen Danby in the club’s pair final.

“He’s such a smart, tactical player,” says Helen.

“And being younger than him doesn’t give you any advantage at all.”

Located in beautiful surroundings on the edge of the North York Moors, Helmsley Bowling Club welcomes new members of all skill levels, from those who have played before to those wanting to learn the game.

They point out that all you need is a pair of flats and that coaching is provided and any other equipment you might need can be hired at the club.

The club competes in three local leagues and hosts internal club competitions and social bowling.

A club spokesman said: “Whether you’re looking for a gentle sport to improve your health or make new friends, joining Helmsley Bowling Club may just be what you’re looking for.

Our facilities are first class with a clubhouse serving delicious teas by the ladies for friendly matches with other clubs and other special events and our greens are maintained to county standards.
