NRL Supercoach 2023: Comprehensive guide on how to play, how to score points, strategies and more

NRL Supercoach is scheduled to start this week and with the addition of the Dolphins in 2023 comes big changes not only to the actual competition but to the game within the game.

The salary cap has been increased, as has the player’s ability to make those all-important trades, while a farewell rounds overhaul is sure to garner plenty of attention.

The sports news has put together a comprehensive guide on how to navigate the season and come out on top in Supercoach.

NOTE: All instructions are based on Those of the Daily Telegraph NRL Supercoach game.

WHEN DOES 2023 NRL SUPERCOACH BEGIN?

The Supercoach competition coincides with the start of the NRL season, with Parramatta meeting Melbourne Thursday March 2nd launch a brand new campaign.

The two variants of the game revolve around the Classic version, where each person gets an identical salary cap in which to build their roster, and the Draft version, which doesn’t stick to the cap and instead focuses on a unique player selection concentrated.

WHAT IS THE 2023 NRL SUPERCOACH SALARY LIMIT?

The cap from last year’s $10 million has been increased to $11.45 million to reflect the actual increase in the NRL.

Only your 17 starters will earn points, but it’s important to make wise choices with your remaining eight players who will provide support and hopefully help make money off the bank.

HOW TO PLAY NRL SUPERCOACH

Once you’ve registered, you face the first big decision of the game and you have to come up with a team name.

You can also choose your experience level; Beginner, Intermediate or Expert, which will make you more attuned to other players in public leagues that you can join with your team.

When that’s done, you’ll be taken to the My Team portal, where the fun really begins – selecting a 25-man team.

position code Number of selections required
hookers HOK Two
Front rowers FRF Four
2nd row to the front 2RF Six
halfbacks HFB Two
Five eighths 5/8 Two
center/wing ctw Seven
defender FLB Two

NOTE: Selected players have dual position status, giving you the freedom to select them in two different positions.

During the season these are changed according to a person’s actual positioning within the NRL. The updates will occur before rounds 6, 12, and 18.

HOW TO JOIN A LEAGUE

When you register for Supercoach, you are automatically added to a public league. However, you can also create/join a private league from the Leagues page.

Joining a private league requires a code given to the league administrator when it was created. Most leagues are head-to-head leagues where you compete against a different Supercoach player every week and try to outdo them with your team for competition points.

MAJOR RULE CHANGES FOR NRL SUPERCOACH IN 2023

The addition of the 17th franchise, the Dolphins, has presented many obstacles.

In the NRL, the season has increased from 25 to 27 rounds as a team has to deal with a bye each week due to the unequal number of teams in the competition.

There is a new point system for the main rounds, in which the majority of the teams fail. In rounds 13, 16 and 19 only the result of your best 13 players counts.

Four more trades have also been added, bringing the season’s total to 46, while keeping the maximum number of trades per round at two.

However, five “Trade Boosts” can be applied during the season, giving players an extra trade during rounds if they need it.

The draft version of the game also added the option to play “Best 13” in the big bye rounds, while introducing greater control and customization through things like the ability to pause the live draft.

NRL SUPERCOACH CLASSIC: TIPS AND STRATEGIES

  • Cheap rookies should be your bread and butter: Stack your bank with cheap ‘Cash Cows’ that will make you money while your big names score the big points. You only have to play against 17 of your 25 players, which means the beginners can make money even if they don’t score massively. If you choose wisely, you can then arm your misers with weapon players.
  • Research Big Names: Don’t get caught picking a player based on popularity alone. Superstar status does not always equal Supercoach status.
  • Don’t burn your trades too soon: Every trade is crucial. They are most useful in the Origin period when players are at camp or resting from club duties.
  • Monitor Breakeven: This is the most useful way to predict price changes in the market and make money with your team.

WHAT ARE BREAKEVENS?

A breakeven is the number that determines how a player’s value fluctuates. It is the approximate score that the player must achieve in order for their prize not to lose value.

For example, if a player’s breakeven point is 65 and he scores 50 points, his price will go down. If a player breaks even at 40 and scores 60 points, their price increases.

You must play at least three games, and each breakeven is determined using a three-round moving average.

WHY IS EARNING MONEY SO IMPORTANT AT NRL SUPERCOACH?

Most rookie supercoaches assume that points win games. But just like in the real world, money talks.

You can start with $11.45 million in your pocket, but that number can increase over time.

The secret: “Cash Cows”. Or simply put, those players who start at a cheaper price and gain value based on their performance on the pitch.

These players are the backbone of any successful Supercoach team as they allow you to upgrade and build the ultimate fantasy team throughout the season.

NRL SUPERCOACH FINAL REVIEW

  • Register for KFC NRL Supercoach and pick a 25-man roster with a salary cap of $11.45 million for the Classic version of the game.
  • Each weekend, pick your 17 (13 starters and four substitutes) eligible to score.
  • Within the allotted selection of players, you must choose a captain – who scores double points – and a vice-captain who serves as a backup.
  • Their squad of two hookers, four props, six backrowers, two half-backs, two five-eighths, seven center-backs and two full-backs score points based on their on-field performances in the NRL.
  • Manage your roster to end up with a side that earns more points than your competitors and is worth more than you started with.
