Worth seeing moments! The stars in Hollywood shone brightly as celebrity A-listers descended on the Oscars 2023 on Sunday, March 12 – and the fun continued all night long.
host Jimmy Kimmel set the tone at the historic 95th Academy Awards with his opening monologue laced with his signature sense of humor. The comedian, 55, wasn’t afraid to joke Will Smithwho notoriously rocked the 2022 Oscars when he slapped the presenter Chris Rock for his dig at his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith.
“We have nominees from all corners of Dublin,” revealed Kimmel. “Five Irish actors have been nominated tonight. Which means the odds of another fight on stage just got a lot higher.”
Elsewhere in his speech, the talk show host pointed out that the academy takes last year’s surprise attack very seriously.
“If someone commits an act of violence in this theater at any point during the show, you will be awarded the Academy Award for Best Actor and you may give a 19-minute speech. But seriously, the academy set up a crisis response team,” Kimmel said, referring to how Smith, 54, took home the 2022 Best Actor Oscar King Richard after the stage attack. “If anything unpredictable or violent happens during the show, sit there and do absolutely nothing. Maybe even hug the attacker.” (The Wild, wild west The actor has since apologized for his actions. Smith was also banned from all Academy events for 10 years and is no longer a member of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.)

The host quipped, “And if either of you get mad at a joke and decide to cheer with it — it’s not going to be easy.” Then he pointed to actors Michael B Jordanwho is known for his role as a boxer in Believe, Andrew Garfieldwho played Spider-Man, and Michelle Yeohwho famously starred in Crouching tiger, hidden dragon, as spectators who would have his back. (Later in the evening, Yeoh, 60, won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Everything everywhere at once.)
Kimmel playfully added, “No nonsense tonight. We have no time for gimmicks.”
When the awards ceremony began, the cast of Everything everywhere at once quickly won two major categories in a row. Ke Huy Quan was brought to tears upon accepting the trophy for Best Supporting Actor.
“Mom, I just won an Oscar!” the 51-year-old actor began his speech. “They say stories like this only come out in the cinema. I can’t believe it’s happening to me. This – this – is the American dream!”
Jamie Lee Curtis was equally surprised when she won Best Supporting Actress for the drama, 60 years after her late mother Janet Leigh was nominated for an Oscar. Her late father, Tony Curtis, was also an Oscar nominee during his career, but neither of her parents ever won.
“I know it looks like I’m standing alone up here, but I’m not,” the 64-year-old actress told the audience. “I’m hundreds of people… The artist group that made this movie, we just won an Oscar!” (The movie also won Best Picture.)
