PlayStation Plus May lineup packs a brand new release and the best Ratchet & Clank game ever

Sony has confirmed the PlayStation Play lineup for May (opens in new tab) for Extra and Premium tier subscribers, and this month subscribers are treated to a truly compelling collection of games. The line-up even features a brand new release on duty from day one in the form of Humanity.

Starting Tuesday 16 May, PlayStation Plus members with an Extra or Premium account will get access to 18 games playable on PS5, while Premium subscribers will get an additional four titles. The range includes Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which is not only a flagship first-party exclusive but also an entry on our list of the best PS5 games you can play right now.

The revamped PlayStation Plus has quietly emerged as Xbox Game Pass’s serial competitor, and May’s game selection is particularly strong. Because there are so many excellent titles to choose from, we’ve picked a few of our favorites below to give you a starting point. We’ve also listed everyone’s full lineup so you can see everything you’ll have access to from next week.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

In 2021, we dubbed Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart “the game the PS5 was born for,” and that’s still true almost two years after its release. Not only does the action-adventure game look stunning on Sony’s flagship console, it also takes full advantage of all the PS5’s next-gen features, utilizing the speed of the SSD for dimension leap scenes and the implementation of DualSense The feel of the controller adds to the immersion. It’s also the best Ratchet & Clank game yet, with a compelling story and tons of unlockable invention weapons. Plus, the new Lombax character, Rivet, is an absolute delight, giving even the titular duo some sympathy competition.

Following in the footsteps of Stray and Tchia, Humanity will join the PlayStation Plus lineup from launch. While we can’t comment on the quality yet as we haven’t played it ourselves, it’s always exciting to get a new release as part of a gaming subscription. The game is being touted by developer THA Limited as “a unique blend of puzzle-solving and action-platforming that puts the fate of all humanity in your hands.” Oh, and if that doesn’t pique your interest enough, you also play as a dog, which is perhaps the game’s biggest selling point.

Tomb Raider trilogy

We’re kind of cheating here by recommending three games at once, but the entire Tomb Raider Reboot Trilogy is coming to PlayStation Plus this month. This trio consists of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and all three games are worth playing. Clearly inspired by the PlayStation-exclusive Uncharted franchise, the rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy narrates Lara Croft and shares some of her most personal stories yet. But there’s still a decent dose of blockbuster action and even a few supernatural elements to keep things interesting.

Watch Dogs: Legion was far from a critical darling upon release in November 2020, but the Ubisoft Toronto development team did an admirable job updating the game with a host of post-release fixes and a ton of additional content (some free, others) supports paid DLC). As it stands, it’s a fairly unique open-world game that allows you to take control of pretty much anyone you meet on the street and then recruit them into your gang of freedom fighters. The setting of a dystopian London is also refreshing and most missions can be approached in different ways depending on the strengths and abilities of the chosen character.

Overall, it’s a very strong month for PlayStation Plus with a wide range of critically acclaimed games in the lineup, and the inclusion of a brand new release always adds an extra layer of excitement.

If you are on the Essential tier, you can already download and play your three monthly games. And this month’s pick includes a grossly underrated medieval multiplayer game that’s among the best PS5 games you’ve (probably) never played.
