Sporting CP manager rules out Cristiano Ronaldo transfer possibility

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim dismisses the possibility of signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has scrapped the possibility of signing Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. The Portugal head coach thinks the prospect is non-existent.

The 37-year-old returned to the Red Devils last summer. Joined Real Madrid in 2009, the legendary number seven returned in 2021 to the place where he made his name. But now, just one season later, Ronaldo seems to want an exit.

Sporting CP were one of the clubs linked as a potential target for the wanton striker. But in a pre-match press conference (h/t Manchester Evening News), Amorim dismissed talk of Ronaldo joining the Primeira Liga giants.

“He’s a Manchester United player and I’m not going to comment on opportunities that don’t exist. He’s a Manchester United player and it looks like he’s moving on [there].”

One reason for the Portugal international’s unhappiness at Manchester is the lack of Champions League football this season. However, the 37-year-old remains in United’s plans as the club are unwilling to part ways.

Ronaldo important for United

Ronaldo finished last season as the Red Devils’ top scorer. He scored 24 goals in all competitions for a United side that struggled throughout the season.

The Portuguese was the only player on the attacking line to carry the team. Apart from him, only Bruno Fernandes scored double-digit chances.

We missed out on a top four finish last season when our attack faltered and our defense looked shaky. Last summer’s acquisitions, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, couldn’t make a difference either.

The new season has started similarly. We lost 2-1 to Brighton & Hove Albion. United played without a recognized striker. Anthony Martial was injured and Ronaldo didn’t prepare well in pre-season under Erik ten Hag. Christian Eriksen had to be used as a center forward.

In the second half, Ronaldo came on early but we couldn’t take any points. Hopefully the Portuguese stays this season and can help the team score goals.
