HT: Sporting Lisbon 0-0 Liverpool

Half-time and Liverpool overcame the heavy blow of losing Doak in just eight minutes with a fine performance.

They were the better team overall in the first half but Sporting had two great chances before the break.

Here still very much in limbo. Aimless.

Yellow card

Davidson booked for a high boot on Moreira despite Liverpool getting the throw.

added time

Two minutes of stoppage time.

Big save by Davies

Another sporting chance, this time a chop from Justo Moreira puts back in play but Davies does well to come down and save to his left.

Missed chance for Sporting

Great opportunity for Sporting. A lucky strike sees Ribeiro head in for a clear shot on target for Moreira, but he pulls it wide of the far post.

Liverpool are still goalless after 42 minutes.

Yellow card

Justo booked for a tugboat on McConnell.

The Liverpool midfielder has put in a real stint so far in his unusual hybrid position.

The game gets a little scratchy

The game has entered a somewhat ambivalent phase with both teams giving away the ball too easily.

Sporting goalkeeper Callai throws a bit of danger but Young can’t quite cut the pass in front of the goal.

Liverpool still 0-0 on 36 minutes.

Over the pole

McConnell finds a bit of space but hits wide from 25 yards, with two Liverpool team-mates demanding a pass to the left.

It’s been a very close game so far.

Chance for Liverpool

Half a chance for Liverpool when the ball falls into the box from a deflected cross to Stephenson, but the shot from the turn is blocked.

Still goalless and now in the 27th minute.

Liverpool regroup

Liverpool regrouped after that early setback, forcing a series of corners and free-kicks in the Sporting area.

Corness’s delivery was good but Sporting did well to defend it.

Got pretty quiet

Things have calmed down a bit since that substitution.

No great chances to speak of, apart from Sporting’s header which went over the bar.

Liverpool are trying to create chances but are struggling to get past Sporting’s defence.

Opportunity for Sporting

Sporting’s first chance when Justo shoots a header into the roof of the net from a cross from the left.

Worry about Ben Doak

This is a huge blow to Doak and Liverpool.

However, there really was no other choice as Doak collapsed on the grass after the incident and looked very shaky when he was helped. Hope he recovers quickly.

Ben Doak was substituted

Doak is a tough guy, but that was a big blow to his head. He immediately tried to drive on, but wobbled onto the lawn. He won’t continue.

Heavy blow for Liverpool.

Doak comes off after just eight minutes and is replaced by Ranel Young. Liverpool goalless.

Ben Doak is being treated

Doak is down after suffering a very bad blow to the head during a tackle with Sporting defender Joao Muniz.

Currently in treatment.

Liverpool construction

It looks like Liverpool are playing wide out with Doak and Frauendorf and nobody getting through the middle of the attack from McConnell, who arrives from deep in an advanced midfield role.

Unusual pre-match

To be fair, this was an unusual pre-match. The crowd is currently singing along to a version of My Way that appears dedicated to Sporting.

BEGIN

We are here in Lisbon.

Live updates to follow.

Here come the teams

The two teams enter the field.

Kick off is approaching… meanwhile

The music has now evolved into German versions of The Stone Roses.

Only in the UEFA Youth League…

music selection

Some of the music is interesting here.

There seem to be German versions of some Kop classics in my opinion. It’s definitely not English and doesn’t sound Portuguese to me.

Discovered Roberto Martinez

In the main stand (well, just stand) a seat is reserved for former Everton manager Roberto Martinez, who is now the head coach of the Portugal national team. Will be interesting to see if he shows up.

Martinez is here. Confirmed.

Facts about Sporting Lisbon

Sporting beat Ajax 5-1 in the last round. Fatawu Issahaku scored a hat-trick and was their best player this season, but he’s not involved here.

Instead, he is with Sporting’s first-team and will feature in Arsenal’s Europa League squad on Thursday.

The player to watch out for is Sporting goalkeeper Diego Callai. He’s also the captain. Seems to have a great reputation.

Liverpool construction

Liverpool start without a recognized centre-forward, although young duo Jayden Danns and Keyrol Figueroa are both on the bench.

Ben Doak and Bobby Clark are the two standouts but it could be James McConnell who comes from deep midfield and ends up becoming a striker.

Melkamu Frauendorf is another who is expected to play in an attacking position.

Pitch update from Lisbon

The game will be played at Sporting’s academy, which appears to be named after Cristiano Ronaldo.

He used to play for Sporting. You may have heard of him.

Incidentally, the course is extremely hard and doesn’t look easy to play. Expect the ball to bounce.

Ahoy

Welcome to the Aurelio Ferreira Stadium here in Lisbon for the final game of Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League season.

Yes, it’s Sporting Lisbon and it’s the quarter-finals.

The Reds have never progressed beyond the last eight, having previously failed at Manchester City and Juventus last season.

The conditions are nice in terms of weather. Should be a good one.
