Teams leave the Champions League after the Round of 16

Club Brugge And Borussia Dortmund were the first two clubs to fail at the round of 16 hurdle, although things went very differently for the two.

Dortmund won the first leg 1-0 and were then narrowly edged out in the second leg by Chelsea, who narrowly went through with a 2-0 win.

Club Brugge weren’t even expected to make it to the last 16, so the fact they lost to Benfica by a 7-1 aggregate goal didn’t come as a complete surprise.

Unlike clubs who failed to break out of their group in the Champions League, none of these sides will get a second chance in the Europa League and will have to wait until next season (that is, if they do manage to qualify for European competitions).
