Tuchel handed one-match suspension while Conte avoids touchline ban after clash following Chelsea’s draw with Tottenham

Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte have been fined by the Football Association (FA) for their behavior in last week’s 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham.

The Blues boss was also banned for one game, with this penalty being suspended for the time being.

The two managers clashed more than once during Sunday’s London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Once on the touchline after Tottenham’s first goal and then again when they shook hands after the game, resulting in both being shown the red card.

What are Tuchel and Conte accused of?

The FA have fined the duo, although they can appeal the penalties.

“An independent regulatory commission today ordered Thomas Tuchel to be fined £35,000 and banned from the touchline for one game and Antonio Conte to be fined £15,000 after they each breached FA Rule E3 “, it said in a statement.

“Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte admitted their behavior was inappropriate after the final whistle of the Premier League match between Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday 14 August 2022 and both managers requested a written hearing.”

The statement added: “These sanctions are subject to appeal and Thomas Tuchel’s one-game touchline suspension has been temporarily suspended pending the written justification of the independent Regulatory Commission for its decisions, which will be made available in due course.”

What did Tuchel and Conte say about the incident?

Tuchel downplayed the importance of the post-game incident, he said in an interview with Sky Sports“It’s emotional, football. We don’t need to heat it up.

“They have emotional coaches on the sidelines and that’s it. When we meet [later], we meet. If not, then not. Come on guys, it’s between two competitors and nothing bad happened.”

Then he told me BBC Sport: “It was hot from the temperature and hot between the benches and hot on the field and hot between the crowds – everything you want and hope from a game like this at the start of the season.

Conte then took to Instagram to joke about the tensions between himself and his Chelsea colleague.

Posting a picture of Tuchel running down the touchline to celebrate his team’s goal, he added: “Luckily I didn’t see you… It would have been well deserved to make you trip.”

Jesse Marsch interferes before the game against Chelsea

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch commented on his punishment in his press conference ahead of this weekend’s game against Chelsea.

When asked if he was looking forward to a friendly handshake with Tuchel, Marsch was confused. “Are you saying that he might be able to sit on the bench?” March asked reporters. “That doesn’t seem right, does it? If you get a red card, you’re out of a game. I’d be disappointed if they allowed him to sit on the bench. There’s a simple rule in football if you have one get a red card, you can’t play the next game.”

Marsch himself is known for his fiery outbursts during games, showing both exhilaration and frustration on the touchline since taking charge at Leeds last spring.
