Tuesday Best Bets, Monday Recaps
Monday was a day when we felt a shift towards spending more time playing basketball at the Tuley’s Takes home office as we did a lot of research on the upcoming college basketball conference tournaments and saw more hoops than pucks.
I had to pick up my son Maddux after school and take him to his Las Vegas Youth Orchestra rehearsal (with our weekly trip to In N Out, where I ordered the triple triple cheeseburger and extra large chocolate milkshake from the famous “Secret Menu”) . While he was at LVYO, I went to Westgate and watched my best bet of the day lose over 1.5 on a Red Wings Senators/Canucks Stars parlay in the first period as the Red Wings Senators lost despite Ottawa’s only 1 goal scored seven shots on goal in the closing minutes (in addition to hurting my wallet, the Senators scored in the first 3:41 of the 2nd period and the two teams combined 5 goals in that period; in hindsight I should have saved Red Wings- Senators 2P over 1.5 with Canucks-Stars 1P over 1.5 as the latter conceded easily with 2 goals in the first 8:37 and 4 goals in the first 20 minutes). But by this point my focus had already turned to my NBA game at the Miami Heat +6 at the 76ers when Miami took an early lead and completely upset a 101-99. Then I also conceded with my college basketball game when West Virginia upset Iowa State 72-69. When I handicapped that game on Sunday and spent it on my weekly appearance on The Greg Peterson Experience and the Monday morning version of this column, it was a choice between an unranked team and a top 25 team like Iowa State at No. 23 (but then dropped out of the top 25 when AP released its poll later Monday morning). Anyhow, it turned out to be a successful day. Let’s wrap up the rest of Monday’s action in the big team sports, then look for more best bets for Tuesday.

CBB: West Virginia (+4) defeated Iowa State 72-69 in the Big 12 bout after Iowa State just dropped out of the top 25 this week (with a total of 134.5 points). No. 7 Baylor defeated Oklahoma State 74-68 and covered as a narrow 1-point street favorite (went just over 141.5 on free throws by 5 seconds).
NBA: The underdogs went on Monday with upsets by The Heat (+5.5 in 101-99 win at 76ers), Knicks (+2 in 109-94 win over Celtics) and Magic, beating SU and ATS 3-1 (+4.5 in a 101:93 win). in pelicans). The Hornets (-7) were the only Chalk to win over the Pistons in a 117-106 win. Home/road teams split 2-2 SU and ATS. Unders won 4-0.
More NBA: The Favorites fell to 594-312 SU during the season with 15 games ending pick-’em while the Dogs improved their thin ATS lead to 449-435-22 (50.8%). Home teams lead 551-370 SU and 475-426-20 ALTS (52.7%). For total bets, overs’ narrow lead fell to 457-450-14 (50.4%).
NHL: The Faves went 4-1 on Monday, with the only one upset by the Canucks (+230 in the 5-4 OT win at the Stars). The Senators, Bruins, Avalanche and Ducks won like chalk. Home teams went 3-2. Overs/unders parted 2-2-1 with the push in the Ducks’ 4-2 win over the Blackhawks by a bet total of 6 goals.
college basketball best bets
Lip comb +2 at Stetson: I’m not sure if the correct team is being favored here in this Atlantic Sun Tournament game. Although Stetson won the first meeting between these teams in December, they only met last Friday when Lipscomb pulled away by 17 points in overtime to win the regular-season final 98-91 as Stetson failed to provide an answer for Jacob Ognacevic had (29 points) and Derrin Boyd (20) as Bison had a 54-32 lead in the paint and also had a season-low five turnovers.
Arkansas +6.5 in Tennessee: This is more of a fade from Tennessee, which is 2-6 ATS down. However, we also like what we’re seeing from Arkansas, who have gotten healthier and have an 8-3 ATS run in their last 9 games, as well as 7-2 ATS against win-record teams, including a mere 86-83 loss after No .2 Alabama on Saturday. We’re expecting another close game here.
Tuesday NHL best bet
Kings jets 1P under 1.5 +115: This is the only NHL game I do on Tuesdays because the Jets are the #3 1P Under team and these teams are 66-55 (54.5%) combined this season. That tells me this should be around -120, but we’re getting a decent plus price. There’s another potential 1P Under game on Tuesday when the top two teams meet the Islanders’ Wild hosts, who combine with 1P Unders for 74-49 (60.2%). But the books are on those teams as that line was -125 overnight at DraftKings and -145 at BetMGM. I’ll pass that on.
XFL Week 3 Best Bet
San Antonio Brahmas +4 at Houston Roughnecks: I also put this out Sunday night/Monday morning and it’s up to +4.5 at BetMGM and Resorts World here in Vegas as well as DraftKIngs in other states so followers should wait and look around. Houston was mid-table in preseason XFL futures, but they are now the +300 favorite at Circa Sports after beating Orlando 33-12 in the season opener and beating Arlington 23-14 on Sunday night. Meanwhile, San Antonio lost just 18-15 to preseason favorites St. Louis in their opener, beating Orlando (30-12) almost as hard as Houston. Road teams are 5-3 ATS in the XFL so far, so I think Houston is being given too much for home field advantage in a game that I think should be closer to pick-’em, or at least under a field goal.
