UFC 279 date, start time, odds, schedule & card for Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz

After going back and forth with the UFC about his contract and potential opponents, Nate Diaz’s final UFC fight could be his toughest assignment yet. On September 10, Diaz faces a rising star in Khamzat Chimaev. The fight will take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Chimaev, 28, is a three-time Sweden national team gold medalist. He made his pro debut in 2018 and joined the UFC in 2020, where he won three fights for promotion that year. Chimaev took the MMA world by storm with his skills and killer mentality.

The Chechen-born man suffered complications after testing positive for COVID-19 in 2020, resulting in several fights against Edwards being nullified. At one point he thought about retirement after coughing up blood. Chimaev eventually returned in October 2021, beating Li Jingliang by submission. Chimaev’s last fight was a unanimous decision victory in April over Gilbert Burns.

Despite the age and skill gap, Chimaev and his team don’t want to discredit Diaz.

“He is by no means an easy opponent for us. And Nate Diaz will probably make money,” Chimaev head coach Andreas Michael told MMA Junkie. “It’s not in any way unfavorable for Nate because if he accepts this fight, you can understand that he was paid or will be paid. He’s not just going to accept this fight out of nowhere, you know? So it’s an advantage for him as well as for us – and it’s a good fight.

“I think it’s a good fight. It’s a good name – a veteran of the game. He’s fought everyone and everyone and it’s a good experience and they didn’t take him lightly. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s like we’re fighting for the title.”

Diaz made his pro debut for the WEC in 2004. The 37-year-old won The Ultimate Fighter in 2007. Diaz is 14-11 in the UFC and faced off against Clay Guida, Donald Cerrone, Jim Miller, Gray Maynard and Conor McGregor. He’s on a one-on-one losing streak; Most recently, he fought Leon Edwards at UFC 263 in 2021.
