USA vs. Canada final score, result: Explosive first inning powers Americans to wire-to-wire WBC win

The fireworks were in full force at Chase Field on Monday as Mike Trout, Trea Turner and company raced to a straight win over Canada.

Any fears that the US would come out sluggish after Sunday night’s fall against Mexico were quickly dashed, especially as Batter captured first base after Batter Walk. 19-year-old Mitch Bratt looked his age on the mound and was struggling to find his pitch control. Could anyone really blame him? He faced a buzzsaw of an American lineup filled to the brim with MVP winners, All-Stars and general studs who can cause problems on the plate.

Bratt only lasted one and was picked after giving up a place with four. It was just the beginning for the USA attack, with Trout delivering the killer shot – an undeniable triple smasher, the highlight of the USA’s nine-run first inning.

After that, the game became a formality. Lance Lynn took the mound for the Stars and Stripes and served admirably despite taking more risks in a blowout game. He was eventually replaced by Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas, who impressed in limited pitches.

The Canadians continued to put up a good fight, even breaking the scoreboard with a screaming Jared Young homer in the top of the second. But the damage was done. And when the game was called at halftime in the seventh inning, there was no doubt which team was the favorite to make it out of pool c – even if the Mexican result showed otherwise.

Final standings: USA 12, Canada 1

00:28: Mikolas makes Denzel Clarke look down and USA sails to victory

00:26: One remains for Mikolas and the Americans. Should be finished here soon.

Top of the seventh inning

00:22: Inning ends after a fly out. One more (hopefully).

00:16: Anderson, a notorious freeswinger, rips the ball over the second to bag his second of the game. Cade Smith, Canada’s newest arm, didn’t stand a chance.

Looks like Pete Alonso is headed up the steps to pinch for Realmuto.

00:13: Tucker puffs through Loenen’s fastball to start the sixth. He is the only American batsman to have been held without a batting effort.

Loewen went to the shelter. Strong performance from the former Blue Jays relief.

end of the sixth inning

12:09 am: The dirty hook confuses Young, meaning the 10-run mercy is still in order for the seventh inning.

00:05: O’Neill grabs his teammate’s court and smokes it over Betts’ head, pushing Freeman into third place.

12:04 am: Julien meets them where they aren’t and swings off the shift to improve with a weakly battered single.

00:03: One up, one down for Mikolas, who makes soft contact with his first-ever matchup.

Top of the sixth inning

11:59 p.m.: Arenado’s deep drive falls harmlessly into O’Neill’s head to end the inning. It looks like Miles Mikolas will take the mound for the Americans in the sixth.

11:57 p.m.: Goldschmidt is clipped by a faulty fastball and takes first base in a snap. Arenado up now.

11:55 p.m.: Adam Loewen for Canada. He begins his performance with a walk to trout.

11:50 p.m.: Mookie headed back to the dugout after not checking his swing in time. That will be Diaz’s last hitter. He’s been strong ever since he came on. At the moment it’s the small victories that count.

11:47 p.m.: Mullins flies off to start the fifth.

End of the fifth inning

11:44 p.m.: Another goalless frame for Lynn. The White Sox pitcher hasn’t had too many problems other than Young’s things. Four runs in the bottom half would end the game.

11:41 p.m.: Lynn is approaching his 65 pitch limit. He’ll be finished after the fifth inning.

top fifth

11:31 p.m.: Inning ends with a whimper as Turner flies out to the left. See you on the fifth.

11:29 p.m.: Diaz pumps a fastball past Anderson for the K.

11:28 p.m.: New pitcher for the Canadians. It’s Indigo Diaz, another youngster who threw an A-ball last year. However, opens the inning with a fly-out.

11:26 p.m.: Canada is going down quietly. Loading the fourth inning.

11:23 p.m.: Freeman flies to the left field to open the left field to open the frame. O’Neill is on his way up now.

Top of the fourth inning

11:18 p.m.: Freure puts Arenado on strikes. Scoreless inning for the Canadians. That is a beginning.

11:15 p.m.: Goldie rakes a double into the gap, putting Cards’ teammate Arenado on the diamond.

end of the third inning

11:08 p.m.: 1-2-3 innings for Lynn and the Reds, Whites and Blues. Let’s see if the Americans can extend their lead in the bottom half.

Top of the third inning

11:02 p.m.: Freure puts down Mullins with an inch-perfect curveball.

10:59 p.m.: RUN HOME! From one LA star to another! Turner turns on Freure bad luck and deposits it on the left field grandstand. That’s ugly.

USA 12, Canada 1

10:57 p.m.: Anderson adds another run after scoring on Realmuto’s flyout.

USA 11, Canada 1

10:55 p.m.: Anderson moves to third place with a stand-up triple. That will score Arenado and extend the US lead.

USA 10, Canada 1

10:51 p.m.: Arenado takes over first after seeing four balls fly past him. A pretty common sight so far.

end of the second inning

10:47 p.m.: Lynn walks out of the inning and only gives up the one hit, Young’s homer. Back to the States for the bottom half.

10:44 p.m.: Wagers with the web jewel to steal a hit from Lopez. Shades of 2018 there.

10:42 pm: RUN HOME! Jared Young hunches in the cheap seats and starts the second inning with a bang.

USA 9, Canada 1

Top of the second inning

10:40 p.m.: The attack ends for the Americans when Goldschmidt comes up short. That was overwhelming.

10:38 pm: RUN HOME! Trout slams one into the night sky as the Americans extend their lead to 9-0. It’s not the first time you’ve seen that this year.

USA 9, Canada 0

10:37 p.m.: Breaking Ball plunks Betts, who targets first after banging around. Milville Meteor back on the record.

10:34 p.m.: The runs continue for the Americans. Turner drives Realmuto home on fielders’ pick before Mullins drives a deep-to-left field en route to a treble.

USA 6, Canada 0

10:32 p.m.: Righty RJ Freure takes the ball for Canada. Last A-Ball played in the Braves’ system. His first matchup: newly minted $200 million Trea Turner.

10:28 p.m.: JT Realmuto slips a single past Julien and that will do it for Bratt. Difficult introduction to the spotlight for the youngster but he has plenty of time to learn his stripes.

USA 4, Canada 0

10:26 p.m.: Bratt gives up another walk. Two on, one out for the Stars and Stripes.

10:25 p.m.: Bratt put in a decent performance against White Sox star Tim Anderson. Same count with 2:2.

10:24 p.m.: Goldschmidt brings home after a Tucker flyout.

USA 3, Canada 0

10:22 p.m.: The first pitch swing pays off for Arenado, who shoots a single over the head at third baseman. That’s two runs in for the US that could face a big inning.

USA 2, Canada 0

10:20 p.m.: Goldschmidt goes five pitches and takes manager Ernie Whitt to the hill. Stressful situation for the boy who seems to be supported by his team.

10:19 p.m.: Bratt is looking every bit of his 19-year-old body right now. Seven straight balls thrown from the yute.

10:18 p.m.: Bratt shoots four squares and sets the plate for reigning NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt. Not a good start for the youngster.

10:17 p.m.: Mike Trout is now at the helm for the USA. He will try to move Betts by any means necessary.

10:16 p.m.: Mookie Betts starts with a single. Compete at first base with club teammate Freddie Freeman. How sweet.

end of the first inning

10:13 p.m.: Breaking ball at the top of the zone freezes O’Neill for the third shot. 1-2-3 start for Lynn, what could be better.

10:12 p.m.: Freeman cleared after flying to left field. Tyler O’Neill steps onto the plate now.

10:10 p.m.: Lynn opens the day with a strikeout and blitzes past Edouard Julien with his fastball. Freddie Freeman is next for Les Rouges.

Top of the first inning

9:50 p.m.: Mitch Bratt and Lance Lynn on the hill for Canada and USA respectively. Big day for Bratt, who is making his WBC debut at just 19 years old. The Rangers prospect has been putting up strong A-ball numbers over the past year, posting a 2.45 ERA with 99 strikeouts in 80.2 innings.

He’ll have his work cut out for him tonight when he takes on those loaded USA bats.

9:45 p.m.: The USA and Canada have adjusted their lineups for tonight’s game. Some big stars in chase field.
