Watford 1-1 Wigan Athletic: Hornets play-off chances dented

James McClean
James McClean’s equalizer for Wigan was his third goal of the season

Wigan struggled to a point with a rearguard performance against Watford but remained six points from safety by the end of the Championship as their dismal run stretched to just one win in 17 games.

The Hornets were up front from the start and seemed to keep their playoff hopes alive when Keinan Davis scored his sixth goal of the season just before halftime.

The Latics played clean and constructive in the build-up phase but offered little in the last third as they sought their first away win in eight games.

They equalized in the 51st minute when substitute Callum Lang crossed James McClean to find the top corner with a superb header from the edge of the box.

Tempers flared on the touchline late in the game after Joao Pedro’s idea of returning the ball to Wigan after an injury layoff was to take it out of play near the visitors’ corner flag, sparking a furious confrontation between the two managers and Watford boss Chris Wilder then booked.
