Former Davis High athlete Courtney Wayment represented Northern Utah at the 2022 Governor’s State of Sport Awards presented Thursday night by the Utah Sports Commission at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City.

Wayment was named the state’s College Athlete of the Year for winning the individual national championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while running for BYU at the NCAA track and field championships.

Wayment ran 9:16.00, setting a new college record for women.

The Utah Sports Commission was established to preserve Utah’s Olympic legacy and to help improve Utah’s economy, image and quality of life through the attraction, promotion and development of national and international sports.

National Sports Award: Natalie Williams (women’s basketball star, native of Utah, gold medalist at the Olympics), Apolo Ohno (speed skater who starred at the 2002 Olympics)

High School Female Athlete of the Year: Teya Sidberry (Judge Memorial basketball player who became the state’s all-time leading scorer)

High School Athlete of the Year: Jackson Brousseau (four-time state champion in three sports at Lehi High School)

College Athlete of the Year: CourtneyWayment

College Athlete of the Year: Clark Phillips III (Utah football defensive back, expected big NFL draft pick this summer)

team of the year: University of Utah Women’s Ski Team (third straight national championship)

coach of the year: Kyle Whittingham (University of Utah Football)

Lewis Feild Memorial Award (Rodeo): Scott Anderson (longtime attorney and leader of the Utah rodeo)

Professional Athlete of the Year: Gina Magana (Utah Falconz Women’s Soccer)

Professional Male Athlete of the Year: Tony Finau (professional golfer)

Adaptation Athlete of the Year: Matthew Brewer (USA Paralympic Alpine Skiing)

Olympic Team of the Year: Aerials Gold Medalist

highlights of the year: UFC “The Kick Heard ‘Round the World” (Knockout Kick by Leon Edwards at UFC Salt Lake City Event)
