Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen has offered his opinion on the recent restrictions imposed by the FIA on political statements made by participants during events. He believes that being able to speak your mind freely is crucial and that the FIA’s latest move is worrying.
In a recent interview with Heaven, Magnussen spoke about the importance of freedom of expression and how the new rules have yet to be understood. He said:
“I have yet to understand. I think many of us have yet to understand what that means. I grew up in a country where we are all free to express our beliefs and religions and speak our minds.”
He continued by talking about how important it is to the sport for riders to speak their mind, saying:
“I think that’s a value I appreciate and would like to see in Formula 1 as well. That’s why I’m curious to see how these talks will go. It’s just not great. I’d like the freedom — not that I necessarily intend to do anything — but I do think freedom is an essential value.”
The FIA updated its International Sporting Code to prevent participants in its events from making political statements without prior approval from the governing body. The move drew criticism from drivers, including Magnussen.
