I’m a little late as it’s already in theaters, but if you haven’t seen it yet or booked your tickets you might be wondering what the best format is to see it Shazam! wrath of the gods. The first film came out in April 2019 and stood out from the usual DC roster by being a film that focused on fun rather than overly meaningful melodrama, and it worked well enough in terms of box office to justify a sequel. This was originally supposed to be released in late December last year, but after realizing it would go toe-to-toe with him Avatar: The Way of WaterDC wisely chose to push it back to this weekend to give it some clean air to fire ahead, so to speak.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, the film was directed by Gyula Pados, whose previous credits include the first two Jumanji films, so he knows exactly what an action film that doesn’t take itself too seriously should look like. The cameras used are ARRI Alexa LF and ARRI Alexa Mini LF, along with a Leitz Prime lens. Although both cameras are part of the Filmed In IMAX program, this film has not been formatted for IMAX – it has a basic 2.39:1 aspect ratio. So if you’re not seeing this on IMAX, you’re not technically missing out. Of course, there’s no doubt that IMAX always has size and massive sound in its favor, especially when you’re within range of, and if you choose to use, a local IMAX screen that has a laser projector with 12-channel sound You’re more than likely to have a great experience.
However, you may see this as an opportunity to try a different format. It won’t be stereoscopic, however, as while there has been a mini 3D revival (Avatar: The Way of Water and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, to name two), it doesn’t extend to this superhero film .
If you’re lucky enough to have a Dolby cinema in your area, that would be a good choice. A Dolby Vision master has been prepared and Dolby offers you the brightest picture with the best color and contrast available today – and comfortable seats.
The next best thing will be a premium large format screen, offering a 4K projector (the film was finalized to 4K) and high-quality audio, often Dolby Atmos. How this is branded depends on your local chain. In the UK, Cineworld has SuperScreen, Empire has IMPACT, while Vue has no name – it has Sony Finity projectors and Dolby Atmos is some screens. In the US, two examples of these formats are Regal RPX and Cineplex UltraAVX.
Shazam! wrath of the gods could also be a credit for the multi-sensory 4DX format, which has seats that move and smack you in the back, and effects like smoke, water, and flashing lights. I’ve had mixed experiences with 4DX, but I’m tempted to try again.
Another alternative is ScreenX, which offers some extra impact scenes to the sides of the main screen, but this generally seems less successful than the extra image you get from Filmed In IMAX. Another format that might be worth trying again.
Finally, there’s a standard 2D screen, but for a superhero movie, that seems like a boring option.
