The summer edition of the World Juniors is here. The tournament started with three games on Tuesday, but home country Canada will make their debut tonight with a matchup against Latvia.

The Edmonton group is slightly different from the version we saw in December. Notable stars like Owen Power, Shane Wright, Cole Perfetti and Jake Neighbors do not play for Team Canada. However, there is still a wealth of talent wearing the maple leaf as Mason McTavish, Connor Bedard and Kent Johnson are ready to lead the way for the Canadians.

First up for Canada is Latvia, who played Finland on Tuesday and came out 6-1 on the wrong side. Klavs Veinbergs had the long goal for the team while Bruno Bruveris stopped 33 of 39 shots in the opening game.

Latvia was promoted to the top tournament with the expulsion of Russia from the IIHF. Belarus would have been promoted after first place in the Division IA tournament but were also suspended. Since Latvia finished the tournament in second place, they were given a chance to advance.

It is the country’s first time playing at World Juniors since 2017 and seventh time overall.
