When is the UEFA Europa League draw? Date, time, qualified teams for 2022/23 tournament

The season of European club competitions kicks off next month with the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League promising more exciting action in the coming months.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s final win over Rangers in 2022 secured them their first European title since 1980 and a place in this year’s UEFA Champions League. It means Manchester United, winners in 2017, are the youngest Europa League champions in the competition this season.

The incoming playoff round feeds into the final standings for the group stage before the end of August, with the qualifying picture becoming clearer.

However, the confirmed 32 teams will also be influenced by Champions League playoff results as that competition takes shape as well.

When does the UEFA Europa League draw take place?

The draw for the 2022/23 Europa League group stage will take place on August 26, one day after the final round of the play-off qualifiers.

It takes place after the Champions League group stage draw in Istanbul. The scheduled start time is 12pm BST (7am ET/9pm AEST).

How does the Europa League draw work?

The Europa League group stage consists of 32 teams divided into eight groups of four. During the draw, UEFA selects one team from each pot to form all four teams in each group. Teams are placed into these pots based on their club coefficient rankings.

Pot 1 is likely to consist of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal and Serie A duo Lazio and Roma.

Half of the teams participating in the Europa League qualified directly for the group stage of the competition through their league finish or domestic cup performance in 2021/22. The remainder is made up of Europa League playoff winners and Champions League playoff losers.

Pots 2, 3 and 4 are also compiled according to the UEFA club coefficient, which is a mathematical formula used to assess a club’s performance in domestic and continental competitions over the past five years.
