Where is the 2022 World Juniors? Host city, venue for IIHF junior championship hockey tournament
Edmonton, here we are again.
For the second straight year, the World Juniors will be held at Rogers Place, home of the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.
The 2022 tournament was scheduled to be hosted by Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta last winter, but with the tournament being canceled midway, the IIHF decided to try again in August. However, Red Deer is not part of the plans.
The 2022 tournament was originally scheduled to take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, but given the current COVID-19 restrictions, the IIHF decided to move it to Canada. It’s staying in Canada again this summer as the tournament takes place at a unique time of year.

Teams play four preliminary round-robin matches within their group, followed by a three-round playoff.
In the group stage, teams receive three points for an outright win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss, and no points for an outright loss.
The top four teams in each group advance to the Quarterfinals, where matches are determined by seeding. You switch between groups for these games: 1A vs 4B, 1B vs 4A, 2A vs 3B, and 2B vs 3A. The teams that reach the semi-finals will be re-seeded.
The winners of the semi-finals compete in the gold medal match. The losers play for bronze.
Russia was removed from the tournament after the IIHF banned all Russian and Belarusian national teams from participating in IIHF games following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Latvia, runners-up in Division IA, was promoted to replace Russia at the tournament. Belarus was the Division IA winner but was not promoted due to the ban.
No teams will be relegated, so the same 10 countries will compete again in December’s 2023 tournament.
