Representation is at its peak on screen and in the upcoming show Mon is no exception. The idea of comedians Mohammed “Mo” Amer and Ramy Youssef, the show features the titular character navigating his hurdles as he tries to make ends meet while also living as a refugee in the United States with no proper citizenship. Additionally, he has the responsibility of maintaining relationships with his dynamic family and girlfriend. Confronting issues of race, identity and the quintessential American dream, MonThe comedic elements of will make you laugh, but the dramatic storyline will make you cry.
Produced by the folks at A24 who are also behind the American Muslim comedy-drama ramy, Amer and Youssef are overseeing the project as executive producers and writers on the series. Joining the executive producer team includes Ravi Nandan, Harris Danow, Hallie Sekoffand Luv Rakhe. The direction of the show is Solvan “Slick” Naimsame guy behind shows like It’s Bruno and snowfall. Despite the strong comedic background of Amer and Youssef, Mon promises a TV show with “short film vibes” that will add a distinct cinematic style to certain episodes. Exploring different genres, aesthetics and plot dynamics, the series shows what it’s like to juggle different cultures in a foreign land while still being able to exchange a few laughs.

“Mo Najjar bridges the gap between two cultures, three languages and a lot of bullshit as a Palestinian refugee perpetually living one step away from asylum en route to US citizenship. His family — including his sturdy and spiritual mother, sister and older brother — are fleeing to Houston, Texas. Mo laughs through the pain and learns to adjust to his new world, although moving forward in life comes with some setbacks.”

The trailer for Mon was released by Netflix on August 9, 2022. The trailer begins with the eponymous slash of Palestinian refugee Mo Najjar (Amer) being greeted by his white friend in Arabic (“Salaam aleikum!”), much to Mo’s chagrin. The clip switches to Mo driving the streets of Houston, Texas, known as one of America’s most ethnically diverse cities with a rich global community. We see Mo’s everyday life as he gets through one day at a time: selling goods from the trunk of his car, making ends meet to support his family and staying away from the authorities as an undocumented citizen.
Amidst his rocky road to US citizenship, Mo tries to keep his Islamic faith in check and describes his religion as practical. But in certain scenes we see him visiting a church and even sitting in a confessional. And as if his existential crisis wasn’t enough, thanks to his judgmental mother and overly nervous brother, his family is breathing down his neck. Adaptation to different religions, cultures and personal beliefs, Mon is a hilarious yet heartfelt series that shows you don’t have to overcome these obstacles alone. Who is in Mo?
The main character Mo plays none other than Mohammed “Mo” Amer. Amer will also play in the upcoming Dwayne Johnson DC movie Black Adam. Starring alongside Amer is Farah Bseiso as Yusra Najjar, Mo’s mother. Bsieso previously appeared in shadow of silence and Al Zeer Salem. Playing is Mo’s younger brother, Sameer Najjar Omar Elba, who brings most of his life experience as someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to his character. actress Teresa Ruiz is to play Maria, Mo’s girlfriend. Ruiz has made a name for himself in the Mexican film industry and can be seen in the Netflix series Narcos: Mexico.

Little America: based on true stories, Little America is an AppleTV+ anthology series that chronicles the diverse lives of immigrants in America. Each episode treats people from different demographics and presents a unique take on the American Dream. Some stories will make you laugh while others might make you cry. From an undocumented student whose life will be changed thanks to her urban squash coach, to a 12-year-old Kabir whose motel-owning parents were recently deported, Little America is just a small taste of the realities real immigrants face in the country.
