Wolves agree club-record £38m fee for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes who turned down move to West Ham United

Wolves have agreed a club-record £38m plus add-ons deal for Sporting midfielder Matheus Nunes.

West Ham fell through earlier in this transfer window with a bid for Portugal international Nunes but now the Portugal international has opted to join Bruno Lage.

The Hammers appeared determined to secure the signing but despite their progress, Nunes turned down a move to London Stadium

When asked about Nunes’ pursuit, West Ham boss David Moyes replied: “We made a bid for him but he chose not to come.”

Nunes now looks ready to join Wolves, where he will be in familiar company alongside compatriots Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves and Daniel Podence.

Nunes, known for his interceptions and skill on the ball, would bring tenacity to a side from Wolves who already signed Valencia’s Portuguese star Goncalo Guedes this summer.

Nunes has made 101 appearances for Sporting, adding eight goals and nine assists, since joining the Lisbon-based club from Estoril in 2019.

He was a key component in Sporting’s title triumph in 2021 and his impressive form earned him a call-up to Fernando Santos’ Portugal squad last October.

The 23-year-old has since made eight appearances for his country, opening his account for the Selecao in their World Cup qualifying play-off win over Turkey in March.

Wolves hope the forthcoming addition will boost their campaign after a disappointing first two games.

Lage’s side were beaten 2-1 at Leeds on the opening day, followed by a disappointing 0-0 home draw with Fulham on Saturday.

Wolves face a tough trip to Tottenham this weekend in a quest for their first three points of the season and will be confident having won in three of their last four trips to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
