London, Aug. 18 (SocialNews.XYZ) Wolves have announced the signing of Portugal midfielder Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon for a club-record fee.

The Premier League club are said to have agreed to pay Sporting an initial €45m ($45.8m) for the 23-year-old, with a further €5m in possible surcharges, DPA reports.

That eclipses the 35 million euros that Wolves paid Porto in 2020 for Fabio Silva – now on loan to Anderlecht.

Nunes has signed a five-year contract with an option for one year after two-and-a-half seasons at Sporting.

The Brazilian-born player made his debut for Portugal last year and has won a total of eight caps, scoring one goal.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said on the club’s official website: “We are delighted to welcome Matheus to Wolverhampton and are delighted to add another exciting young talent to Bruno’s (Lage) squad.

“Matheus has enjoyed two superb seasons at the highest level in Portugal with Sporting and is widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in world football and is looking forward to a fantastic career.”

Nunes is Wolves manager Bruno Lage’s third signing this summer after signing Portuguese striker Goncalo Guedes, who arrived from Valencia, and Republic of Ireland defender Nathan Collins, who signed from Burnley.

He will join the squad ahead of Saturday’s away game against Tottenham.
Nunes said: “I’m very excited. For me I could play tomorrow but I can’t because the game is on Saturday but I’m looking forward to it.”

“I think the club itself (convinced him) and I also spoke to some of my teammates because I play with them for the national team. The manager too, he really wanted me and I wanted to play in the Premier League. I think it’s the right next step for me and I’m very happy to be here,” he said.
