It’s not often that an automaker is willing to poke fun at itself, but in its latest social media post, Toyota teases both its next-gen Tacoma and its patent department that they might have spoiled a surprise.

The Toyota USA Instagram account posted a panoramic shot of the existing Tacoma today. That might not seem all that remarkable, but the headline “Patented Good Looks…” suggests there’s more going on here than meets the eye.

Indeed, stitched together, we can see that the truck is parked in front of a building labeled “Brazilian Patent Office.” This is likely a reference to the patent drawings of a new Toyota truck released by the Brazilian Patent Office, which were widely reported in January.

These renderings showed a visually extensively updated mid-size truck that inherited many design cues from the 2023 Toyota Tundra. A hexagonal grille, strong, streamlined body panels, and chunky fascia over the wheel arches combine to create a modern-looking truck.

Meanwhile, the perceptive members of the Tacoma4g forums noticed that a blurred vehicle in the background of the photo appeared to have many of the same truck’s design cues. These include the hexagonal grille and headlights with a visible air intake that looks like a stream of tears underneath.

Finally, the Tacoma in the foreground of the image’s license plate can also give us a hint of the upcoming truck. The sign reads “040423” which could be read as the date: April 4, 2023.

This suggests that the fourth generation of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma could be unveiled in just a week. In addition to the updated look, rumors have suggested that the new model will be based on the same platform as the Tundra and will be offered with a hybrid powertrain.
