98 Years On – A Splash Of History!

Proudly sponsored for the first time by SplashOut Print Branding and Media, the Gr1 Cape Derby is a timeless classic, drawing the curtain on Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Summer Festival of Racing in grand style.

SplashOut General Manager Eugene Naidu announced the sponsorship of the big race and said that the prestigious association with one of South Africa’s biggest racing events is a defining moment in the development of the publishing company Winning Media.

“Winning Media was founded in 2015 and our existing involvement in horse racing has now been taken to the next level. The Cape Derby sponsorship is a proud moment for our team and fits seamlessly with our rebranding into SplashOut Print Branding and Media as we reach for the stars to strengthen our service offering to meet the dynamic demands of the ever-changing digital space to be fair. By developing a physical branding solution that aims to exceed the needs of our customers, we aim to be champions in our own field and adding our name to an iconic race like the SplashOut Gr1 Cape Derby underscores our philosophy, always after to strive for excellence,” he added.

SplashOut offers a wide range of signage, branding and printing solutions and have had success providing signage for racecourses across South Africa, specifically Hollywoodbets Greyville, Scottsville, Kenilworth and Durbanville. The company also provided all branding material for the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

With a glittering honor roll that boasts future stallions, Equus champions and some giants of the SA precinct including household names like Colorado King, Sea Cottage, Mazarin, Politician and newer champions like Dynasty, Jay Peg, Capetown Noir, Lawgiver and Goldener Dukat, the SplashOut Gr1 Cape Derby will continue a proud tradition dating back some 98 years when the race was first held as the Western Province Derby 1800m.

The richest race held in South Africa during its formative years, the Classic was renamed the Cape of Good Hope Derby in 1946 and ran over 2400m.

The 1947 renewal was a royal event as the historic Southern Suburbs venue hosted King George presenting the King’s Cup to winner Menlo, who was coached by Syd Garrett and ridden to victory by Stanley Amos, who rode up to his retirement a lawn hero was saddle at 65.

And former multiple jockey champion Michael Roberts, who won the 1994 Cape Derby at Comareen, attempts to saddle See It Again to victory. This could also be Piere Strydom’s swan song Cape Derby ride.

“We aim to raise the bar yet again and make Saturday 25th February the memorable culmination of a sensational summer, with the SplashOut Gr1 Cape Derby leading an exciting day of top-notch horseracing action at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Saturday’s pick 6 pool is boosted by a carry over of R500,000 and is expected to reach R3 million!
