Build a sugar cane farm in Minecraft 1.19 (2022)
We will cover the different stages of crafting a Sugar Cane Farm in separate sections to make it easier for you. One of them also talks about using the Allay in Minecraft to make the farm more efficient. Let’s start with a look at how to use cane in Minecraft.
How to use cane in Minecraft
Before we dive into the farm itself, let’s go through the different uses of sugar cane in Minecraft.
- Paper: Paper made from sugar cane can be used to make books and maps.
- Sugar: Sugar can be used to make a cake and certain potions in Minecraft.
- composting: You can also use Sugar Cane in a Composter to increase compost content by 1 (50% chance) and easily get Bone Meal.
- water displacement: In the Java edition, you can use cane to build underwater roads by displacing water.
Items required to build a Sugar Cane Farm
You need the following items to build a sugar cane farm in Minecraft:
- A bucket full water
- Fifteen dirt blocks
- Sixteen Firmly blocks (any)
- Fifteen Pistons
- Seventeen redstone dust
- one observer block
- one funnel and a chest
- Fifteen sugar cane
- Glass blocks and a door (optional)
Instead of earth blocks, you can also use grass, coarse dirt, root soil, podzol, mycelium, sand, red sand, moss or clay blocks. But the dirt blocks are usually the easiest to collect. There are no alternatives for the rest of the items, so you have to explore your Minecraft world to collect them.
Create an automatic sugar cane farm in Minecraft
Our automatic sugar cane farm is inspired by YouTuber Wattles’ design. But we also added some subtle changes and an additional Minecraft 1.19 feature to improve its functionality.
Item collection and harvesting area
Follow these steps to create the base of an automatic sugar cane farm in Minecraft:
1. Place first 7 blocks of dirt or its alternatives in a straight line. This is where the sugar cane will grow.
2. Then leave the space of a block free and Create another row of earth blocks. After that, place a block of earth on the edge of the gap in the middle.
3. On the edge where there is no block, Create a hole two blocks long and one block deep. Then insert a funnel into the hole that has a chest attached.
4. Finally, to complete this basic area, empty a bucket of water on the inside of the solid block located on one edge of the middle row. It will create a stream of running water that leads straight to the funnel.
Automatic observer area for the sugar cane farm
Follow the steps below to automate your sugarcane farm in Minecraft:
1. First, Place a row of flasks parallel to the dirt blocks. These pistons should be on the back of the dirt blocks and at least two blocks higher than the dirt blocks.
2. Then, place an observer just above the piston behind the isolated dirt block. It should face the water.
3. Next, start building behind the observer block and Place a solid block on top of each individual flask. Make sure these massive blocks are connected to the block placed behind the observer.
4. Finally, to connect the whole system, Place red stone dust on each newly placed solid block and the observer.
5. Now that your entire sugar cane farm is ready, you need to complete it Placing glass or solid blocks. We recommend you cover the top as well to avoid lightning strikes.
How does the sugar cane farm work in Minecraft?
The sugar canes only grow on earth-like blocks when they are near the water. Using this logic, our farm slowly grows sugar cane to a height until they are directly in front of the viewer. As soon If an observer notices the cane in front of them, it sends out a redstone signal. This signal activates all the pistons in the farm to break the cane from the middle.
When the middle part of the cane breaks, it also takes the top part down with it. That broken pieces of sugar cane fall into the flowing water as an object, which brings them to the funnel. The funnel collects the cane in the adjacent chest. Meanwhile, the bottom portion of the cane remains safe and the cycle begins again.
Use Allay to upgrade Sugar Cane Farm
An unfortunate problem faced by a sugarcane farm and several other food farms in Minecraft is that the dropped item doesn’t always make it into the collection system. For example, if the cane is harvested with the cob, it may fall onto the dirt block instead of into the water. To avoid such a scenario, many players rely on various complex redstone mechanics.
But the easiest solution is to get an Allay in Minecraft. That Allay can collect the fallen sugar canes and just throw them on a hopper. In order for the Allay to complete such a complex task, you need to put a jukebox next to the funnel. This particular jukebox should play music continuously to keep the Allay connected and not wander away. Whenever Allay throws the cane at the jukebox, it will be automatically collected by the hopper next to it.
If you want to use an allay on your minecraft farm you will need these additional items:
- Eight pieces redstone dust
- A solid block (any)
- one notepad
- A scatter
- one lever
- Two Redstone repeater
Follow the steps below to add an allay to your sugar cane farm:
1. First, move the chest from the front of the hopper and set it aside. You may have to place the funnel again to connect it to the chest.
2. Then, set up a jukebox at the starting location of the chest and create a redstone machine around it. Here you need to add a solid block next to the jukebox and build a row of Redstone on top of this block. This line should go through Redstone-Repeater in the same way as the screenshot you see below.
3. To start this redstone system, set a lever next to one of the redstone pieces. Then turn the lever and break it immediately. This forces the entire machine to be stuck in a loop.
4. Finally, you must Get an Allay to your farm and give her a piece of sugar cane. The Allay connects to the jukebox and starts working. Also, it’s best to create a larger structure around your farm to prevent the allay from flying away.
