Walsall 0-1 Charlton Athletic – BBC Sport

Charlton reached the third round of the Carabao Cup for the second time in 14 seasons with a 1–0 win at Tier Two’s Walsall.

Charlton’s Joe Wollacott was the busier keeper in the first half, delivering an intelligent low stop after a cross from Andy Williams and thwarting Isaac Hutchinson’s 20-yarder.

The Addicks went close when Albie Morgan swept Richard Chin’s cross from 15 yards just over.

Walsall thought they were ahead just before half-time when Williams seemed to chest to Taylor Allen’s cross against the post, but referee Ollie Yates disallowed the goal and sent off the incredulous striker for handball.

Jaiyesimi broke the deadlock in the 57th minute by shrugging off Saddlers defender Liam Bennett to blast a through ball from Miles Leaburn over Walsall keeper Owen Evans.

Athletic almost sealed the game four minutes later when Chin stepped into the box but Evans made a nice save to miss his shot.

Charlton should have added a second in stoppage time only for Evan’s legs to slow down Jesurun Rak-Sakyi before Walsall’s Tom Knowles missed a great chance to put it in a penalty shootout by curling wide.
