Splatoon 3 Squid Reel: The Basics
Before we look at Squid Rolls, let’s first take a look at why they are so important. In Splatoon 3, you can transform into a squid and dive into any ink stain that matches your team’s color. In the picture above you can see a submerged Inkling. This allows you to move around the map much faster than if you were to stay on foot.
Squid Rolling is a special way of jumping out of the ink that allows you to quickly change directions and give your character a few valuable frames of invulnerability. Given the right circumstances, a timely squid roll is the difference between life and death.
Squid rolling has several steps:
- Dive into an inkblot (But make sure there is enough ink of your team’s color to build speed).
- Swim fast with ‘ZL‘ to pick up speed.
- Once you have enough speed, move the joystick in the direction you want to roll while pressing at the same time jump button. It is important to do both inputs at the same time.
If you roll correctly, your character will move across the battlefield in an inky black blob. If you’re confused about what this looks like, see the screenshot above.
After a few brief moments, your character will come out of their squid reel and continue moving as usual. Remember that you can always dive back down if you need to get out of the line of fire.
