Queen Elizabeth’s Pancake Recipe – How to Make the Queen’s Pancakes
From her colorful wardrobe to her corgis to her historic 70-year reign on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II was a treasured icon.
After learning of the Queen’s death on September 8, 2022, it came as no surprise that people around the world began delving into the archives to learn more about her life — whether through pictures or shows The crownor even recipes.
Yes, the latter may seem unusual for British Royalty, but the Queen actually had a few recipes that she herself favourites, including one for royal pancakes!
The recipe was first shared by Queen Elizabeth in a 1960 letter to President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The original letter and recipe, available in the National Archives, show that the Queen served the pancakes (which are actually called “drop scones”) to Eisenhower and his wife, Mamie, when they visited the Queen at her castle in Balmoral.
“Dear Mr. President,” she wrote in the letter, “to see a picture of you in today’s newspaper, standing in front of a grill grilling quail, reminded me that I had never sent you the recipe for the Drop Scones I promised you Balmoral. I hope you find them successful.”
In addition to the recipe, the queen gave a few helpful cooking tips.
“Although the amounts are for 16 people, I generally add less flour and milk if I use less flour and milk, but use the other ingredients as directed,” she wrote.
And when it comes to making the pancakes a success, she advises, “The mixture needs to be whipped a lot during preparation and shouldn’t sit too long before cooking.” Good to know!
Drop scones are very similar to American pancakes. They’re a bit thicker and smaller, but these BBQ cakes are just as sweet and delicious for breakfast (or as a special treat at tea time). And since they’re so similar to pancakes, they can be served with your favorite pancake toppings – like syrup, jam, butter or fresh fruit.
ingredients
4 teacups of flour
4 tablespoons powdered sugar (or granulated sugar)
2 teacups of milk
2 whole eggs
2 teaspoons baking soda (or baking soda)
3 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons melted butter
directions
“Beat the eggs, sugar and about half the milk until fluffy, add the flour and mix well, add the remaining milk as needed, add the baking soda and cream of tartar, and fold in the melted butter.”
The Queen’s recipe ends there, so in truly royal fashion, there’s a bit of secrecy when it comes to how long they’re simmered and what exactly is a teacup anyway?
Here’s what we suggest: 1 teacup = about 3/4 cup, so you’ll need 3 cups of flour and 1 1/2 cups of milk. Heat a frying pan with some melted butter and spoon the batter onto the frying pan. Then, as with pancakes, when bubbles form, flip to the other side and continue cooking until golden brown. The end result is pancakes fit for a queen! 👑
