How to install a door knob
When we moved into our current home, all doors – inside and out – had tarnished brass knobs and hinges that had seen better days. One of the first doors we wanted to update was the one that led to our backyard. We started by giving the door a fresh coat of gray paint. Next it was time to swap out the hardware. The process is simple, you just need to follow a few simple instructions to successfully complete this DIY project.
1. Remove the old door knob
The first step is to remove the old doorknob. Sometimes it’s not immediately obvious how to do this unless the screws are at the front base of the button. If this is the case, check the bottom of the button to see if there is a small screw underneath that needs to be removed. If not, unscrew the screws from the door knob base and pull out the knob. The other side should pull out easily.
2. Choose a new doorknob
There are a few things to consider when choosing a new door knob. You must decide what finish you want for the new button. They are available in a variety of finishes including black, oil rubbed bronze, gold and nickel. Once you’ve decided on a finish, you need to decide on a style. There are many styles including round, oval, square and bar.
You also need to choose the right door knob type based on whether it is an interior or exterior fitting. Then you have to decide whether you want a lock for the door knob or not. Most interior door knob packages are labeled for closets, bedrooms and bathrooms. For our door we needed an outside doorknob and the style we chose was round. We chose a black door knob to contrast with the gray door.
3. Install the door knob
Now you can mount the doorknob. Start by taking it out of the box and finding the latch. Insert the latch into the hole on the side of the door. Place the metal latch plate over the portion of the latch protruding from the side of the door. Screw the metal plate with a screwdriver or drill.
Next, take the outside knob with the tumbler and insert it into the door lock. Like a puzzle piece, there is only one way to put it in so you’ll know when it’s right. If your door knob has a faceplate that is not attached to the knob, you may need to install it first before inserting the knob into the latch.
Next, find the inner button and fit it into the other side. Insert the included screws into the holes on either side of the knob and screw into the plate.
4. Assembly of the striking plate
Now you can install the locking plate in the door frame. Holding the panel in place, insert the top screw and use a drill or screwdriver to drive it into place. Repeat with the bottom screw.
Outer door latch
If you are installing an exterior doorknob, you must also install the latch. The process looks similar. First insert the latch into the door and mount the latch plate. You locate the outer keyway and fit it into the latch. Next, locate the inside latch and attach it to the other side of the door. Use the included screws to screw it on. Finally, install the strike plate in the door frame.
Installing a door knob is definitely a job you can do yourself with just a few touches and a screwdriver or drill. You’ll be amazed at how great your doors look just by adding new hardware. Go ahead and give your doors the update they need and enjoy a fresh new look by following the steps above! If they are in need of a complete refresh, I would recommend that you paint your doors first and then swap out the hardware.
