ABN AMRO open
- Rotterdam, Netherlands (hard hall)
Rotterdam consistently delivers on the entry list and this year is no different.
The eight seeded are all from the top 16 in the world, with five of the top 10 set to play on the rather sluggish Proflex pitches at Ahoy Arena in recent years.
These seedlings are worth a closer look for players eyeing bets this week.
Twelve of the last 14 editions of this tournament have been won by a seeded winner, while 11 of the 14 have been won by a top four seeded.
Given the quality this top quartet offers in 2023 it makes sense to take one of them and the player I like is it STEFANOS TSITSIPAS on 2.11.
The Greek was only surpassed by Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open, finishing second in Melbourne to great delight this column Fan.
The often criticized backhand held up well – even Djokovic went more into the forehand in the final – and the serve fired regularly.
That shot won’t get as much help from the surface here, but it’s a place where Tsitsipas has won many games in the past, although he’s yet to emerge as champion.
Last season he was the defeated finalist and 12 months earlier he lost in the semifinals.
Certainly part of the reason for his odds of 11/2 here is the presence of Jannik Sinner in his part of the draw – with the unseeded Italian we could get a clash of the players ranked third and 17th in the world in round two. The duo are both in the top 3 of Coral’s overall market.
Tsitsipas, however, leads their head-to-head 5-1, the last clash that took place in Melbourne last month, while Sinner also has a full week of tennis in his legs after reaching Sunday’s final in Montpellier , so I agree to support the Greek here.
He hasn’t always had the best record coming back to action after a Grand Slam, but that’s improved in the last year or so, and in any case he’s already played against Djokovic and two Davis Cup gummies since the final loss in Melbourne won against weak resistance.
That will have kept him going though and he should be looking to continue his strong form earlier in the season.
Holger Rune is the other big threat in this half of the draw and will no doubt have his supporters at 10/1, especially considering he wins H2H against Tsitsipas.
However, he lost to Maxime Cressy in Montpellier on Saturday and I like the way Tsitsipas started the year. He gets the nod.
The leading seeds in the bottom half are Andrey Rublev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, winners of this event in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Again, both deserve respect and I was close to siding with the FAA, whose record at Rotterdam also includes a final appearance of 2020.
However, he has a potentially tricky opener against Lorenzo Sonego, not to mention a possible quarter-final clash with Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev is actually the bookmakers’ favorite this week (best price 9/2) but seems worth taking on – although he won at that 500 level in Vienna towards the end of last season I’d suggest he no event has won this quality since the US Open 2021.
The Russian was beaten well by Sebastian Korda last time out at the Australian Open and I think he needs a significant improvement to win this week.
Instead I think HUBERT HURKACZ has a good chance in this section.
He’s in Rublev’s quarters and has played pretty well in Australia. He reached the fourth round in Melbourne, where he defeated Denis Shapovalov, losing only a tiebreak in the final set to Korda.
The Pole can play on any surface and although his record here is a disappointing 2-3, look at the details and you’ll see that two of Tsitsipas’ losses were conceded, both in straight sets.
Hurkacz opens against Roberto Bautista Agut, who was beaten in straight sets by Arthur Fils with a wild card in his only match in Montpellier last week. That’s a hurdle that should be taken before a clash with Grigor Dimitrov or a qualifier.
His head-to-heads are also encouraging – he’s 2-2 against Rublev, the man he could face in the last eight, while leading 3-2 against Medvedev and the last two sets in two sentences wins.
FAA admittedly lead Hurkacz 2-1, despite the Pole winning the last clash in which the Canadian failed to break serve.
In short, Medvedev looks very competitive here and Hurkacz assesses a valuable point to face him.
