Updated at 7:20am – Here’s what’s making the weather headlines this morning.
CYCLONE GABRIELLE BEGINS PULLING FROM THE EAST TO THE SOUTHEAST AGAIN
The center of former tropical cyclone Gabrielle has sat almost stationary overnight near or over Great Barrier Island. Today this low center is starting to track ESE and we have more very unsettled weather ahead of us.
Heavy rain over Northland will ease from this afternoon. It stalled there (and in parts of Auckland) for a long time, increasing precipitation totals, landslides and flooding.
Very heavy rain south of around Napier will ease this afternoon, but downpours and thunderstorms could occur over the eastern North Island for the remainder of the day.
Heavier weather likely around Eastern Cape today as Gabrielle center arrives.
Very strong south winds trending more southwest as today progresses across North Island and through the Cook Strait, winds will be strongest in the west with gales likely, severe gales over coastal areas easing later today or overnight.
Some heavy rain for the north east corner of the South Island and eventually over the Fiordland mountain ranges scattered showers developing this afternoon some could be severe.

RAIN FOR CANTERBURY – TUESDAY / WEDNESDAY / THURSDAY
Still on track for some rain for Canterbury, parts of North Canterbury today, then rain moves south on Wednesday. Rain may be heavy over coastal parts later Wednesday, then clearing from the south on Thursday.
In the accumulated rainfall map below we can see rain turning up for Canterbury, some rain should be pushing towards South Canterbury but Mid Canterbury to the north is where the totals are higher.

Below are some rainfall graphs and figures for Canterbury. You will find that South Canterbury has lower totals and higher totals further north. Little River has the potential to flood in such scenarios, so keep an eye out later on Wednesday and overnight. The Kaikoura area should also be observed today, a rain warning has been issued by Metservice for Kaikoura. And despite the numbers below, the rain that falls in hills/mountain ranges could be up to 50 percent higher.

Kaikoura Di = 50mm – Wed = 25.3mm – Do = 21.5mm – Overall = 96.8mm
A high pressure area will move across the South Island on Friday and the North Island on Saturday, bringing this week’s events to a close.
