Chelsea ‘not planning to sack Potter’ despite latest loss

Chelsea are determined to stand by Graham Potter despite recent disastrous results.

It’s been a thoroughly disappointing season for Chelsea, who currently lie 10th in the Premier League, 14 points behind the top four and just 10 above the relegation zone.

Apart from their form in the league, they were knocked out of both domestic cup competitions in the third round (both against Manchester City) and are currently in the Champions League round of 16 after a 1-0 first leg loss to Borussia Dortmund in Germany.

Losing to Spurs at the weekend means Chelsea have managed just two wins in their last 15 games, with scoring clearly the biggest problem for Graham Potter’s side.

The Blues have scored just one goal in their last six games – the 1-1 draw at West Ham – and have netted just six in their last 15, the joint-lowest in the Premier League during that period.

Graham Potter has accumulated just 21 points in 18 league games (1.17 points per game) since taking over from Thomas Tuchel in September after the German was sacked after 10 points from six (1.66 points per game).

Not surprisingly, however, given his record, Potter has come under increasing pressure from fans the athleteChelsea’s owners continue to stand by the man they appointed less than six months ago.

They say it was ‘business as usual’ at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, with the owners having no plans to sack the 47-year-old and ‘will continue to give him time to change things’.

After the Spurs defeat, Potter admitted he didn’t do enough to have “too much confidence”: “Even though the results are what they are, I accept it, it’s part of the job,” he said.

“We talked before the game about watching Arsenal All or Nothing [documentary] and two years in Mikel [Arteta’s] Reign he is about to be fired and people want him out. It was seen as a disaster, but things have changed a bit now. If you look at Juergen [Klopp’s] Situation, they don’t have results yet and all of a sudden people want him out. That’s the nature of football.

“I haven’t done enough at this club to have too much good faith, I accept that too. It’s my job not to think about it too much. I have to try and focus on helping the team and supporting the players. They want to get better and win. But right now we are suffering and I am responsible for that.”

Chelsea meet Leeds ahead of the second leg of their Champions League clash on Saturday.
