Latest ‘Demon Slayer’ Makes $10 Million, But No ‘Mugen Train’ – Specialty Box Office
Aniplex and Crunchyroll of America’s Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmiths’ Village grossed $10.1 million in 1,780 theaters that weekend. That’s a fourth spot at the domestic box office, but still half the opening Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train which opened in April 2021 with a whopping $21 million and competes against each other Godzilla vs Kong, Mortal Kombat.
It’s not apples for apples. The previous film was an original film, this weekend’s is a mashup of episodes – specifically Episodes 10 and 11 of the popular anime series Entertainment District Arc, as well as an extended Episode 1 of the anticipated Swordsmith Village Arc. Feature length and remastered in 4K.

The franchise is based on the Japanese manga written and illustrated by Koyoharu Gotouge and published between 2016 and 2020. After his family is brutally murdered, a kind-hearted boy named Tanjiro Kamado decides to become a demon slayer in hopes of turning his younger sister back from demon to human. Along with two comrades and high-ranking members of the Demon Slayer Corps, he embarks on a mission in the entertainment district, where he clashes with high-ranking demons Daki and Gyutaro.

A number of specialty debuts, as usual, won’t report earnings until Monday.
Leftovers: Super LTD was nominated for an Academy Award for Best International Feature Film The quiet girl grossed an estimated $72,000 across 18 screens for a $4,000 PTA and grossing of approximately $149,000 through Sunday in week two.
Bleecker Street Emilyon Emily Brontë, grossed an estimated $194,000 at 565 locations in its third week for a cume of $887.5.
Sony Pictures Classics Return to Seoul Grossed $91.9K across 38 screens (11 last week), averaging $2.4K per screen in week three and grossing $212.4K.
The 2023 Oscar-nominated short films by ShortsTV sees an estimated $370,000 weekend, also in week three, across 250 screens for a total of $2.27 million. By the end of the week, the selection of nominated live-action, animated and documentary films is expected to exceed last year’s total box office figures.
Variance Films, in partnership with Sarigama Cinemas, has announced the re-release of SS Rajamouli RRR grossed an additional $191,000 across 283 screens. This is the 40th weekend of the celebRRRation re-release for a total of $590.5K.
The coin is available from just one to two seasons per day or per weekend for the three-hour film. It has played in major chains and art houses with top engagements including Alamo Drafthouse in LA, AMC Empire in NYC and AMC Grove in LA, Regal Medlock Crossing in Atlanta, Cinemark Lincoln Square in Seattle, Portland’s Hollywood Theater, Nashville’s Belcourt, Salt Lake Das The city’s Broadway Center and Milwaukee’s Oriental Theater.
The Telugu language film, which was first released last March, was nominated by Ocar for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu Performed Live.
“There are no rules for RRR. We love the film, we love the filmmakers, and as exciting as its historic awards ceremonies are, we love to see the joy it brings to cinema audiences. We wanted to give everyone another chance to see the movie big and loud on the big screen as intended, even if they don’t live downtown in a big city, but to be clear RRR will be in theaters forever, because movies like RRR are what theaters were made for,” said Dylan Marchetti, President/Founder of Variance.
