Canada vs Honduras score, result as Cyle Larin brace triggers Canada rout to reach CONCACAF Nations League semifinals

Toronto continues to be the fortress Canada need when qualification is up for grabs.

After securing a World Cup place at BMO Field a year ago, Canada downed Honduras 4-1 to nab a spot in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals, winning their group as they failed to do in this very competition last time out.

Cyle Larin’s brace just 12 minutes into the match did the trick, seeing the 27-year-old grab the undisputed record as all-time leading goalscorer in Canada history, recording his 27th and 28th career international goals. Larin already had the senior international record, but he now passes John Catliff for most all-time in Canada history. Catliff had 19 senior goals, but had collected 26 across his full international career including games not sanctioned as full FIFA international matches.

Larin missed his chance for a hat-trick when he put a penalty wide just before halftime, but that didn’t stop the Canadian momentum. Jonathan David picked up the third goal minutes after the break, and while Honduras snatched a consolation with 18 minutes to go, it wasn’t enough to bring Los Catrachos back into the match.

Canada vs Honduras live updates, highlights, commentary

FULLTIME: Canada 4-1 Honduras

Cyle Larin’s brace set the tone, while Jonathan David and Jonathan Osorio put the icing on the cake of a comprehensive home win to secure a place in the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals.

Wins in CONCACAF play are rarely this dominant, as Les Rouges were overwhelming throughout the 90 minutes in Toronto. It’s a true statement win, as Canada will now likely play Panama or Costa Rica in the semifinals, unless Panama win by six or more goals later tonight, which is unlikely.

Canada vs Honduras: Second Half

90+1 min: With three minutes of added time on the board, Ismael Kone goes down awkwardly after slipping on the turf. It takes some time for either team to put the ball out, he’s finally able to get up and continue after some stretching.

86th min: GOAL! CANADA! The three-goal lead is restored as Ayo Akinola connects with his Toronto FC teammate Jonathan Osorio, who made no mistake one-on-one with Luis Lopez. That’s a wrap on this one, and Canada will be moving on to the semifinals!

Watch in Canada:

85th min: Well, how about a bicycle kick attempt by center-back Derek Cornelius! He gives it a go on the free-kick delivery, and it’s not a bad effort, but the hit goes over the crossbar.

84th min: Walter Martinez picks up the game’s first yellow card as he needlessly shoves Richie Laryea out of bounds. Alistair Johnston is also booked, after stepping in angrily to protect his teammate. Honestly, it’s a bit soft to card Johnston, who was just standing in the way and having words. He didn’t do anything overtly aggressive, while Martinez’s foul was totally pointless and far more venomous.

75th min: The Honduras goal seems to have re-energized Canada, as Alphonso Davies’ shot from a tight angle is stopped by a charging Luis Lopez. Then Richie Laryea is fouled on the right flank to give Canada a free-kick chance.

Off the bench comes Ayo Akinola, with Davies coming off as John Herdman protects his Bayern Munich star. That’s the final substitution for either team, as both sides have exhausted their five changes.

73rd min: GOAL! HONDURAS! The attacking substitutions make an immediate impact, as Jorge Benguche leaps above Alistair Johnston to meet a corner and flicks his header inside the far netting.

Game on? Not quite yet, they need another to really think about it. Remember, they need to win, not just draw.

Watch in Canada:

67th min: Chance, Canada! Alphonso Davies is slipped through on goal by Jonathan David, but Luis Lopez makes a remarkable save one-on-one! Unlucky for Davies, as he was all alone and in great position to grab Canada’s fourth!

Now it’s Honduras’s turn to make a slew of changes, with three substitutions all at once. Romell Quioto, who was man-marked into oblivion by Alistair Johnston, exits alongside Anthony Lozano and Kevin Lopez in an attacking swap. Edwin Solano, Joseph Rosales, and Jorge Benguche all enter.

Watch in Canada:

64th min: Looks like Canada is still in that 3-5-2 despite the slew of subs, with Jonathan David leading the line up front alongside Alphonso Davies. 25-year-old Kyle Hiebert, who has been great to start the year with St. Louis City, is on for his first cap at left center-back. Sam Adekugbe and Richie Laryea are the wing-backs left and right respectively.

61st min: Chance, Honduras! Walter Martinez takes the ball off the feet of his own teammate, and nearly catches Milan Borjan off his line, skimming the top of the crossbar with a volley centrally atop the penalty area.

Canada will make a full line change of substitutions, with four new players set to come on. Atiba Hutchinson enters for cap number 103, plus Sam Adekugbe, Richie Laryea, and Kyle Heibert who comes on for his international debut. Stephen Eustaquio, who just recently got his foot stepped on, will exit, while Scott Kennedy, Tajon Buchanan, and Cyle Larin exiting.

59th min: Canada defender Scott Kennedy is down in his own penalty area and requires treatment. Already wearing a face mask in this game, he looks to be having a potential muscle issue that may require a substitution, as he soaks his left leg in cold water. Kennedy shakes off the stretcher and walks off gingerly under his own power.

53rd min: Yikes, Honduras had a chance to capitalize on a Canada turnover, but Anthony Lozano’s shot is quite poor, missing the target by a significant margin.

Moments later, Oscar Almendarez goes for a sensational volley but puts it over the far corner.

49th min: GOAL! CANADA! About four different Canadian attackers had a chance go begging, but the ball finally sticks at the feet of Jonathan David who gobbles up the garbage to see Canada go 3-0 up! Early indications are that the hosts are up for more of the same here in the second half.

Watch in Canada:

Watch in USA:

Kickoff: The second half has kicked off, as Honduras makes a pair of changes, with Marcelo Pereira replacing Denil Maldonado and Walter Martinez taking over for Johnny Leveron. It was a blinding first half for Canada, and they’ll be looking for more to put this one away. Honduras have to win to advance.

HALFTIME: Canada 2-0 Honduras

Referee Ivan Barton blows the whistle to end what was a totally dominant half by Canada. Cyle Larin’s two early goals put them well in control, and they could have had more as Jonathan David, Alphonso Davies, Jonathan Osorio, and Talon Buchanan were all masterful in the attack.

Larin had the biggest chance for a third, but missed from the penalty spot. There may be conversations at halftime with head coach John Herdman, as it seemed that Jonathan David was a little peeved that he didn’t get the chance to take the penalty, but it made too much sense to let Larin go for his hat-trick.

All-in-all, it was a blistering Canada performance, as their midfield trio ran the show. 20-year-old Ismael Kone appears a real talent for now and the future, and Stephen Eustaquio is every bit a Champions League caliber player.

Canada vs Honduras: First Half

43rd min: Chance, Canada! Jonathan Osorio has a golden opportunity to grab a third but it’s blocked! The cross from the left by Alphonso Davies is behind one man, but reaches Osorio centrally from close range. He drags a  shot that cannons off a Honduran defender, likely destined for the back of the net had it not.

40th min: PENALTY, CANADA! Ismael Kone hammers a shot and it clatters the arm of Denil Maldonado. It’s a fair call, as while Maldonado was right in front of the effort and had little time to adjust, his arm was significantly outstretched. Clye Larin and Alphonso Davies are both standing over the ball discussing who will take, but it’s Larin who eventually remains, sitting on a hat-trick…

LARIN MISSES! The hat-trick isn’t there! He puts it wide of the right post, as Luis Lopez dove the right way. There was a window, but Larin misses it.

Watch in USA:

37th min: Honduras are possessing the ball better, but there’s no room as Canada do well to sit back and spring a counter.

Counter they do, as Ismael Kone puts in a thumping tackle to spring the counter. Eventually, Stephen Eustaquio goes for goal from a great distance, but puts his effort wide. An electric counter-attack that again comes close for Canada.

30th min: Honduras have their first look at Milan Borjan’s goal on a set-piece won by Kervin Arriaga, but the eventual effort skitters well wide, failing to test the Red Star Belgrade goalkeeper. A poor effort.

26th min: Chance, Canada! Luis Lopez saves from Tajon Buchanan from a tight angle on the right, and while the rebound fell right to the feet of Jonathan David in lots of space outside the six-yard box, he puts his follow-up wide. A good chance for the hosts to get a third! While the frenetic pace has somewhat slowed, Honduras are still being utterly battered.

17th min: Honduras escape unscathed after another heavy Canada attack where red shirts are pouring forward. Jonathan David got the ball stuck at his feet after nifty play from a teammate on the left, or else it could have been a third. The Canadians are flying at the moment, pinning Honduras so deep they can’t get out of their own half.

12th min: GOAL! CANADA! It’s all fallen apart for Honduras, and Canada are flying at home! It’s Cyle Larin again, who heads home a Stephen Eustaquio corner to double the lead! Too easy for Larin, who was all alone after his defender Denil Maldonado fell down.

Watch in Canada:

Watch in USA:

8th min: GOAL! CANADA! Cyle Larin opens the scoring with a cool finish from about eight yards out! Alphonso Davies started it by finding Jonathan Osorio, and he plays a one-two with Larin laterally who’s in too much space at the near post. His low effort takes a slight deflection off Johnny Leveron, and the hosts are up early looking for the semifinals.

The goal for Larin is the 27th of his international career, extending his lead atop the Canada all-time career goalscoring list!

Watch in Canada:

Watch in USA:

4th min: Honduras only just avoid Canada going in front by a great tackle from Johnny Leveron. The move was started by Tajon Buchanan who turned on the afterburners and roasted his man down the right side. After cutting into the penalty he squared a ball for Jonathan David in the middle but it was blocked by Leveron’s slide.

1st min: Referee Ivan Barton, who officiated games at the latest World Cup and Club World Cup, blows his whistle for a foul on Stephen Estaquio. Barton is one of the most decorated officials in CONCACAF.

Kickoff: The match is under way at BMO Field! Canada require a win or draw to advance to the CONCACAF Nations League semifinals, while Honduras must win to move on due to goal differential.

Just before kickoff, Atiba Hutchinson was honored by the Canada federation for earning his 100th cap at the World Cup. He’s currently on 102, and would earn his 103rd cap if he appears off the bench tonight.

Canada vs Honduras: Pre-match commentary, analysis, stats, and more

2 mins to kick: It would appear there are some issues with fans entering BMO Stadium. Hopefully they can get as many folks in as possible before kickoff!

6 mins to kick: The Canadian squad got a big welcome to Toronto. There’s a lot riding on tonight’s match!

17 mins to kick: Before kickoff, some players on the Canada side have been working to raise money for earthquake relief. Here’s the details!

38 mins to kick: A few Canada players are sitting on yellow card suspensions, but there’s some confusion over that situation as well. Jonathan David, Tajon Buchanan, Richie Laryea, and Milan Borjan would all be suspended for the semifinal should they earn a booking tonight and Canada advance. Alistair Johnston has already served a suspension, while Steven Vitoria is doing so tonight.

However, there’s some uncertainty around Cyle Larin. While CONCACAF’s website does not list Larin having earned a yellow card against Honduras in the reverse fixture last June, many other aggregators do. The Sporting news has reached out to Canada Soccer for clarification but has not yet received a response.

50 mins to kick: As expected, the Honduras lineup is nearly the same one that played in the El Salvador friendly last week. We expected as much after head coach Diego Vasquez made only three substitutions in that game, a rarity for a friendly, indicating it was valuable time together to prepare. There’s just one change, as Kevin Lopez enters for Alberth Elis up front.

60 mins to kick: The Canada lineup is out. Milan Borjan retains his place in goal, while Ismael Kone is also maintained in midfield. The only changes come as Alistair Johnston slides into the back line for Steven Vitoria, while Tajon Buchanan enters for Richie Laryea. Everything else is the same from the win over Curacao, as John Herdman opts for continuity.

72 mins to kick: It’s quite cold in Toronto this evening, around 41 degrees Fahrenheit, but it’s otherwise sunny and clear for tonight’s match! The last time the Canada men were at BMO Field, they clinched a spot in the 2022 World Cup.

93 mins to kick: It really is remarkable how quickly Canada have risen to continental prominence in North America. Last time around, Les Rouges were narrowly eliminated from the CONCACAF Nations League group stage. This time around, John Herdman wants the silverware.

Interesting too that Herdman says he thinks Honduras will be “patient” even though they know they have to win to advance.

105 mins to kick: The scenario for Canada is simple: win or draw, and they qualify for the Nations League semifinals. For Honduras, it’s even easier: win and you’re in.

However, the scenarios around who plays who also come into play, as the CONCACAF Nations League re-seeds its semifinal rather than holding a draw to determine matchups. Most likely, Canada will play the Group B winner (Panama or Costa Rica), and the United States will play Mexico. However, if Canada and Honduras draw, Les Rouges will play the United States.

The only scenario in which Canada win and are forced to play the United States is if Panama beats Costa Rica by 6+ goals, which is highly unlikely.

120 mins to kick: There are a lot of questions surrounding the Canada lineup that manager John Herdman will field tonight. Saturday’s victory in Curacao came via a 3-5-2 lineup with Ismael Kone alongside Jonathan Osorio and Stephen Eustaquio in midfield.

If Herdman deploys Kone again knowing the importance of this match, it could indicate a true faith in the 20-year-old’s future with the national team moving forward. Other options in midfield could include Atiba Hutchinson or Mark-Anthony Kaye.

Canada vs Honduras lineups, team news

Herdman loses veteran center-back Steven Vitoria due to suspension, but he gets Alistair Johnston back after he sat out the last match due to yellow card accumulation. Captain Atiba Hutchinson will have to wait for his 103rd international cap, but vital pair Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David both start.

The team is already without backup goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau, who is still out with the broken leg he suffered just before the World Cup, while Samuel Piette, Lucas Cavallini, and Junior Hoilett are also unavailable due to injury.

Canada confirmed starting lineup (3-5-2): Borjan (GK) — Kennedy, Cornelius, Johnston — Buchanan, Kaye, Eustaquio, Osorio, Davies — David, Larin.

Canada subs (11): St. Clair (GK), McGill (GK), Zator, Laryea, Hhiebert, Adekugbe, Loturi, Kaye, Hutchinson, Brym, Akinola.

Honduras is coming off a 1-0 win over fellow Central American side El Salvador thanks to an own goal. During the match played in Los Angeles, manager Diego Vasquez used just three substitutes, foreshadowing that there’s very little tinkering in the plans for this match. He makes just one change, as Kevin Lopez enters for Alberth Elis in the attack.

Striker Romell Quioto, in good form with his MLS club team CF Montreal, is the leading Honduras goalscorer, netting 13 times in 64 appearances.

The aforementioned Elis is a 27-year-old winger who plays on loan for French top-flight club Stade Brestois. He spent most of 2022 away from the national team, but returned to play 90 minutes in the friendly against El Salvador, although he’s withdrawn here and could be a late option off the bench should Honduras need goals late.

Honduras confirmed starting lineup (5-2-3): L. Lopez (GK) — F. Flores, Leveron, Maldonado, Garcia, Almendarez — Arriaga, D. Flores — Quioto, Lozano, K. Lopez.

Honduras subs (12): Menjivar (GK), Fonseca (GK), Pereira, Decas, Alvarez, Solano, Rosales, Palma, Martinez, Castellanos, Zuniga, Benguche.

Canada vs Honduras betting odds, lines

Les Rouges are significant favorites at home, and will be widely expected to take home the victory and advance to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League.

Interestingly, despite the fact that Canada are given a 1.5 goal handicap advantage (spread), the under 2.5 total goals is also a slight favorite, meaning that the betting market is leaning toward a 2-0 victory for the hosts in Toronto.
