Superman: Legacy writer-director James Gunn addressed the Man of Steel costume and asked if he would wear the trunks.

If you’re a fan of The Man of Steel, you know why today matters. Because already in June 1938 Action Comics #1 would hit the stands — and pop culture as we know it would never be the same again. So who better to take to social media to honor Superman than the man who wants to bring Supes back to screens in a big way – co-head and co-head of DC Studios? Superman: Legacy writer and director James Gunn. But even when Gunn posts a tribute to The Man of Steel, he still finds a way to give us a quick update or two. In this case, it’s about an issue that you don’t realize is a big deal until you bring it up, and then — Wow! Yes, we are talking about the suitcases – this tribes. Some people love them, while others see them as useless “outerwear.” So what will the final decision be in 2025?

“Indecisive. We’re doing an incredible amount of concept art for both now and will use whichever version looks best. For me, the most important aspects of the character go beyond the suitcases!” Gunn shared in a follow-up tweet that he was responding to a fan’s question regarding Superman’s final costume look. Here’s a look at what Gunn had to say about the special day of The Man of Steel – followed by a throwback to when Gunn first announced he would be writing and directing the screenplay Superman: Legacy:

James Gunn announces that he will write and direct Superman: Legacy

Here’s a throwback to Gunn’s March 2023 tweet announcing that he would be writing And to direct Superman: Legacyfollowed by the full, heartfelt text of the message he shared, which confirms what’s been circulating on social media since the previous week:

“Yes, I am directing Superman: Legacy, which is due out on July 11, 2025. My brother Matt told me when he saw the release date that he started crying. I asked him why. He said, ‘Dude, it’s dad’s birthday.’ ‘I wasn’t aware of that,’ Gunn wrote at the start of his series of tweets announcing the news. “I lost my father almost three years ago. He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me as a kid, but he supported my love of comics and my love of film, and I wouldn’t be making this film without him.” It’s been a long road to this point. I was offered Superman years ago – I initially said no because I hadn’t found a way that felt unique, fun and emotional and gave Superman the dignity he deserved. Then a little bit less than a year ago, I saw a way in that in many ways revolved around Superman’s legacy — how both his aristocratic Kryptonian parents and his Kansas farmer parents influence who he is and the decisions he makes.”
