Mexico vs Qatar live score, updates, lineups, and result from CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023
Mexico, under new caretaker coach Jaime Lozano, will be looking for three straight wins when they take on Qatar in the group finals of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday.
After a spectacular debut win over Honduras (4-0), Mexico struggled a bit more against Haiti before prevailing with a brilliant second half (3-1). El Tri secured a place in the quarter-finals by beating Haiti and Lozano has said he will rest his starters against Qatar.
The Qatari team, hosts of the 2022 Men’s World Cup, is a member of the Asian Football Confederation and takes part in the Gold Cup as a guest nation. But they are not happy visitors, having conceded a late winner against Haiti (2-1 loss) and then a late equalizer against Honduras (1-1 draw) marked by poor refereeing, according to coach Carlos Queiroz. They have to win against Mexico to have a chance to go through.
“We should be able to be like Mexico, who already qualified with six points,” Queiroz told the media. “Our team deserves more respect, not what happened in the last two games. It is important that the referee and VAR did not see the handball in the last game. If it happens, we need to understand why it happened.” and she should be here to explain it. Not me.
Sporting News will be following the Mexico v Qatar game live with live score updates, commentary and highlights during the game.

Mexico vs Qatar live updates, highlights and commentary from the Gold Cup
43 minutes: Penalty Mexico? It looks like a Qatari player rushed into the back of Gerardo Arteaga, who ran into the box from a cross. Referee Drew Fischer gives no penalty and VAR gives no sign of a review. According to the reps, it looked rather marginal.
40 minutes: SUB Qatar. The No. 10 must be replaced by Ali Asad. Asad came on as a substitute for the last two games and takes up the right-center position.
37 minutes: Warning. Mexico fans at Levi’s chant homophobic chants at the ensuing goal kick and the Levi’s PA announcer reminds fans not to use it.
35 minutes: Chance Mexico! And it’s another set piece. A ball from the left finds Edson Alvarez, who heads the ball and the ball goes up just under.
30 minutes: Chance Mexico! Santi Gimenez heads a cross on goal, but Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham deflects the ball for a corner. Nothing comes of it. Good reaction from Mexico.
27 minutes: Goal Qatar! The Asian side surprisingly take the lead! A cross from right-back Musab Khoder finds Hazem Shehata’s head in the box. The header hits Mexico goalkeeper Memo Ochoa, who can touch the ball but not save it.
Qatar score on their first big chance. Julian Araujo has lost his man. Qatar left winger Shehata simply ran past him.
22 minutes: Chance Mexico! Luis Chavez almost hits the frame with a long-range free kick. It was almost a Chavez special. Mexico is trying everything, but they are not yet able to break through.
15 minutes: Chance Mexico! Ozziel Herrera steals the ball from a Qatari defender – they give the ball away so easily – and shoots straight at the goalkeeper. Herrera needed that to take off here.
10 minutes: Chance Mexico! A low cross from Luis Chavez nearly lands in Santi Gimenez’s box after Qatar’s pivot. But a defender got a chance to throw the ball to the corner. Nothing comes of it.
Gimenez was active. Ozziel Herrera, who is positioned far right, has not played a role so far.
5 minutes: Orbelin Pineda and Gerardo Arteaga actually work on the left side (Qatar’s right side). Mexico are in control early in this game. When Qatar has captured the ball, they cough it up right away.
1st minute: We are away. Mexico wears green, Qatar all white.

Mexico vs Qatar betting odds
Mexico are the big favourites, Qatar have an almost one in seven chance of winning the game. The betting market is so biased towards Mexico that the margin for this match is as much as 1.5 goals (versus the usual 0.5 goals).
But you wonder if the market takes into account that it will be an alternative Mexican team, made up of the substitutes who haven’t played a real game together to develop any rhythm or solve problems.
For that reason, it might be best to focus on both teams to score considering the game should be wide open as Qatar have nothing to lose and need a win at all costs to establish themselves to qualify for the quarterfinals.
