Mexico, under new caretaker coach Jaime Lozano, will be looking for three straight wins when they take on Qatar in the group finals of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday.

After a spectacular debut win over Honduras (4-0), Mexico struggled a bit more against Haiti before prevailing with a brilliant second half (3-1). El Tri secured a place in the quarter-finals by beating Haiti and Lozano has said he will rest his starters against Qatar.

The Qatari team, hosts of the 2022 Men’s World Cup, is a member of the Asian Football Confederation and takes part in the Gold Cup as a guest nation. But they are not happy visitors, having conceded a late winner against Haiti (2-1 loss) and then a late equalizer against Honduras (1-1 draw) marked by poor refereeing, according to coach Carlos Queiroz. They have to win against Mexico to have a chance to go through.

“We should be able to be like Mexico, who already qualified with six points,” Queiroz told the media. “Our team deserves more respect, not what happened in the last two games.
