Arsenal vs Sporting CP Predictions

Arsenal maintained their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League table at the weekend.

After Manchester City put the pressure on Mikel Arteta’s men with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, Arsenal responded with a comfortable 3-0 win over Fulham the following day.

It was one of her best performances of the campaign. Arsenal completely dominated the Cottagers, who are having an excellent season themselves, and led 3-0 at the break.

This weekend they have the chance to extend their lead to eight points. Arsenal meet Crystal Palace, who are without a win in 2023, on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manchester City will not play in the Premier League due to their FA Cup commitments.

Until then, Arsenal have a chance to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League. At some point, they may need to focus fully on their title bias.

But for now at least, Arsenal can afford to split their attention between the two competitions, even if the Premier League is high on their list of priorities.

Arteta named a weakened side in last week’s first leg, although Arsenal’s side still had several starters.

A 2-2 draw in Lisbon puts the Gunners ahead ahead of Thursday’s second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Playing in the floodlights in front of their own fans, Arsenal could prove too strong for Sporting CP.

Arsenal vs Sporting CP Betting Tips

Arsenal should get the job done against Sporting CP on their home turf, although Arteta will no doubt be eyeing the weekend.

Tie/Arsenal Halftime/Fulltime – 3/1 (bet365)

Arsenal put in a brilliant performance in the first 45 minutes at Fulham.

“It’s really tough when you play every three days, you go to Europe, you come back and you see the energy, the quality and the understanding, the willingness to go back there and be really dominant,” Arteta said of the performance in the first half .

Arsenal have largely been great in the opening stages of Premier League away games.

They were leading at half-time in eight of their 14 games in opposing stadiums. The second best number in the division shared by five different clubs is five.

But they were slower off the blocks at home. While Arsenal are leaders in away games in the first half of the season, they are only seventh in the corresponding home rankings.

Six of their 13 top-flight meetings at the Emirates were even at half-time.

That’s perhaps because Arsenal’s opponents tend to sit deeper when they take on the Gunners in north London. In games on their own ground, they tend to push forward – and risk leaving space.

Sporting could also score against Arsenal in the first half on Thursday, but we assess the hosts’ chances of completing the task in the second half.

Both teams to score – Evens (bet365)

Arteta criticized elements of Arsenal’s first-leg performance.

“We’re conceding too many easy goals,” he told reporters at his post-Lisbon press conference.

“We talked about the importance of boxing, especially in an in or out competition. We didn’t defend that well enough and we need to threaten the opponent better.”

Arteta will have been delighted with how well his defense held up to Fulham’s challenge on Sunday.

Nonetheless, there’s reason to believe Sporting CP have what it takes to find the back of the net this week.

This is a team that knows where the goal is. Sporting have scored two or more goals in five of their last six games.

Admittedly, none of their domestic opponents have been as strong as Arsenal in that period, but Sporting also managed to score two goals against Arteta’s men last week.

In addition, the Gunners have kept just one clean sheet in their last five meetings at the Emirates. Visiting teams find it easier than before to score at Arsenal’s stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli scores anytime – 7/5 (bet365)

Gabriel Jesus made his first appearance for Arsenal since the World Cup on Sunday.

The Brazil international came on in the 77th minute at Craven Cottage, much to the delight of the visitors.

Arsenal have done remarkably well without Jesus. When news of his injury first broke, club fans worried about the team’s ability to sustain the title fight in his absence.

But Eddie Nketiah, Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli have all stepped up to fill the gap down the middle and leave Arsenal in a fantastic position as we near the business end of the season.

Martinelli in particular has been in superb form, with five goals in his last six games.

With Jesus highly unlikely to start on the sidelines after a few months, his compatriot on Thursday looks like the best bet to find the back of the net.
