Arsenal vs Sporting live score, updates, highlights as Gunners take lead in Europa League second leg

Arsenal move away from their bitter Premier League title hunt to play a crucial Europa League home game against Portuguese club Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikel Arteta rotated the squad heavily for last week’s round of 16 first leg in Lisbon and it showed as the Gunners flopped to a 2-2 draw. With the matchup now very much in the balance, Arteta faces a big decision.

Arsenal are five points ahead of the Premier League table and still have work to do to secure this year’s title, but a European push will be almost as tempting and with a place in the quarter-finals at stake today, momentum is at stake would be felt by passing a strong Portuguese club.

The Gunners are now almost fully healthy too, meaning Arteta has a variety of options to turn to depending on how he views this round of 16 second leg.

Arsenal vs Sporting Live updates, highlights, comments

halftime: Arsenal 1-0 Sporting

The Gunners take a 3-2 lead overall after 45 minutes in the Emirates. Xhaka scored for the hosts, who looked lively but also saw defenders Tomiyasu and Saliba replaced with injury worries. Sporting have been relatively subdued but have shown enough signs of a comeback.

45+4 minutes: Ugarte tries his luck from a distance and almost produces something special with a Xhaka defense that only takes the ball past the goal.

45+2 minutes: Xhaka gets a yellow card for a foul in the middle of the park. An eventful first half for the Gunners captain.

45+1min: The corner goes wide but Sporting have four minutes of added time here to create something before the break.

45 minutes: Sporting wins the first corner of the game and looks for an equalizer just before half-time.

41 minutes: St Juste charges at Sporting but, under pressure from Gabriel, shoots over the bar from the top of the box.

39 minutes: Jorginho guilty of a clumsy foul in the middle of the park. The referee speaks to him, but holds back with the card for the time being.

35 minutes: Arsenal are now starting to really control possession and move dangerously up front. Sporting are doing just enough to keep going and it looks like they’re aiming to hit the counter.

30 minutes: Jesus is close to marking his return with a goal when he cleaves a shot under pressure in the box but Adan is alert to save at his near post.

28 minutes: Martinelli forces a good save for Adan from a corner. Sporting runs up the other end as Edwards spins in the box but his shot is blocked. This game is really starting to open up.

27 minutes: Arsenal suddenly find time and space on the ball in midfield. That Xhaka seems to have taken some of the infill from Sporting.

21st minute: Another forced move here for Arsenal as Saliba is replaced by Holding. Both Saliba and Tomiyasu were able to run away with relative ease, so Arteta will hope neither of them caught anything too serious.

19 minutes: Goal! Arsenal take the lead through Xhaka. It all begins after a stunning through ball from Jorginho, who charges Martinelli into the box. While the striker’s attempt is saved, the ball bounces back to Xhaka, with the midfielder calmly driving the ball home.

18 minutes: The Gunners call for a penalty after Viera was brought down, but the referee quickly brushes it off after getting a clear view of it. Replays show the Sporting man got the ball before he got any of the players.

16 minutes: Arsenal pinch the ball in midfield, feeding it to Nelson on the right who crosses the ball to the back stick where Jesus manages to make contact but Adan manages to lead the ball away from goal.

15 minutes: Jorginho tries to put a ball through to Jesus but Adan just manages to get out and collect it before the Brazilian.

13 minutes: Athletic winger Trincao has an effort on goal after cutting in with his left boot, but the ball rolls just wide of the far post. Best chance of the game so far.

8 minutes: Arteta takes the chance during a break in the game to address his team. Tomiyasu is also injured, with White coming as a right-back.

4th minute: A bright start here from Sporting, who are looking to look ahead and ask questions of Arsenal’s defense from the start.

1st minute: Arsenal try to test the left flank up front but the ball is just too heavy for Martinelli.

Begin: We’re in the Emirates, Arsenal are getting things going.

5 minutes to kick-off: Both teams are in the tunnel preparing to come out. Sporting look particularly serious and focused as they view an upset at the Emirates.

10 minutes to kick-off: Gabriel Jesus is back and starting again for Arsenal. The Brazilian could give the Gunners a huge boost in their silverware quest this season.

45 minutes to kick-off: A rough pick note for American fans is Matt Turner, who falls on the bench. The US starting goalkeeper had been a healthy Cup starter for Arsenal but struggled in the first leg in Portugal. While Mikel Arteta rotates the rest of the squad, Aaron Ramsdale is risked in goal, boding badly for the American losing his place.

60 minutes to kick-off: Mikel Arteta has decided to rotate the squad again to prove what winning the Premier League title would mean for this club. Thomas Partey, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Ben White are all rested as, like in Portugal, a multitude of players join the squad.

90 minutes until kick-off: It is likely to be Gabriel Jesus’ first start since returning from a serious knee injury and Mikel Arteta is delighted to have him back.

120 minutes to kick-off: The debate surrounding Mikel Arteta’s team selection today is intriguing. Some people act like playing a top-flight line-up is somehow a knife at the throat of their Premier League title, which just isn’t right, but there’s certainly a risk involved.

Resting players in the first leg clearly had its downsides, so Arteta will see this game as important. Still, there could be some rotation if the Premier League is prioritized.

Arsenal vs Sporting Betting Odds & Lines

The Gunners are level with Sporting (2-2) in the standings but the Premier League club see themselves as heavy favorites both in the 90 minutes and going through. They hover around 1/3 to win the game in most places while Sporting sit as a huge 7/1 underdog.

While this may fall a little short for the Portuguese, it’s clear Arsenal deserved their podium as even the second choice was good enough for a first-leg draw.

There is some confusion over the course of this game as the betting market believes that it will be difficult for Sporting to find the shot on goal, but the total number of goals is still up to around 2/3.
