Ballon d’Or 2022: How to watch the ceremony – Date, time, live stream, how to follow on Eurosport

The Ballon d’Or, Ballon d’Or Féminin, Kopa Trophy and Yashin Trophy will be presented in a lavish ceremony at the Theater du Chatelet in Paris on October 17th. The ceremony begins at 7:30pm UK time.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have won 12 of the last 13 Ballon d’Ors – with Real Madrid’s Luka Modric the only escape in 2018 – but Messi wasn’t even nominated for the 2022 award. Karim Benzema is the hot favorite to win the men’s trophy, while Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas – despite missing Euro 2022 through injury – is expected to win the women’s trophy.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony also awards prizes for the best goalkeeper – the Yashin Trophy – and the best young player in the world – the Kope Trophy.

How does the Ballon D’or voting process work?

France Football, a highly regarded football publication, has shortlisted 30 candidates for this year’s Ballon d’Or with 20 names for the women’s award.

100 journalists from FIFA’s top 100 nations then select their top 5 from the 30-strong shortlist. The same process takes place with the women, but with 50 journalists from different nations.

Players on each judge’s list will receive points as follows:

position number of points
First Six points
Second Four points
third Three points
Fourth Two points
Fifth One point

If two or more players are tied on points, the number of first place votes they received will be used as the tie-breaker.

The three main criteria by which the judges make their decisions are: individual and collective performance over the past season, a player’s class and career.

Whoever gets the most points wins the prize.
