Votes and Rule Changes

This year’s nominees were announced on August 12, and it will mark the first time results will be decided based on what has been achieved during a season rather than an entire calendar year. The new formula is intended to cover the most critical sporting period with a sharpened jury, a stricter selection process and clearer award criteria.

France Football has indicated that “individual performances” and “determined and impressive character of the competitors” will be the most important criteria, ahead of “the collective aspect and the trophies won” and “the class of the player and the sense of fair play”.

forecast

It felt for a while as if Benzema had set his sights on winning the men’s prize after his last UEFA Champions League title with Real. Really, there are few other credible contenders with stronger cases than this year. Despite her injury, Putellas could well win back-to-back women’s titles. It wouldn’t just be the first time in the history of the award. She would also become the most titled female Ballon d’Or winner of all time.
