Barcelona players 2022/23: Updated squad, jersey numbers for La Liga, UEFA Champions League, Copa del Rey & Supercopa
After Barcelona failed to win a trophy in 2021-22, Barcelona will be eyeing a much more successful season over the next nine months.
Despite the club’s financial difficulties, Xavi has been given the power to sign some key new players.
The Catalan club spent over €150m in the off-season just to sign Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde.
Their arrival will shake up the Barca side as some existing players now face an uncertain future at the Camp Nou.
Barcelona squad and shirt numbers for 2022-23
Xavi has assembled a team this season that is brimming with attacking potential.
From new signings Lewandowksi and Raphinha to established regulars Ousmane Dembele and Ansu Fati, Barcelona don’t look like they’ll be short of goals this season.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen has remarkably few challengers as a starting goalkeeper, with Inaki Pena the sole back-up after Neto’s departure to Bournemouth.
Defensively, Xavi has stocked up on central defenders Jules Kounde and Andreas Christensen.
New signing Franck Kessie also seems ready to strengthen Barca’s midfield, which already boasts talented youngster Pedri and veteran Sergio Busquets.
Lewandowski unsurprisingly took over the No.9 shirt for the 2022-23 season, with Ferran Torres switching to No.11 and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opting for No.17.

How will Barcelona line up this season?
After signing five new players in the summer, Barcelona’s 2022-23 starting XI will look significantly different.
Xavi favored a 4-3-3 formation at Camp Nou last season and maintained that form in pre-season.
Based on Barcelona’s current squad, a likely line-up would be as follows:
Ter Stegen – Dest, Christensen, Garcia, Alba – Kessie, Busquets, Pedri – Dembele, Lewandowski, Raphinha.
However, the recent signing at Kounde has prompted reports that Xavi could consider using a 3-4-3 formation – a formation he previously used at Al Saad.
Such a move would allow Barcelona to get the most out of their many centre-backs while giving the side a greater presence in midfield.
A 3-4-3 formation for Barcelona this season could look like this:
Ter Stegen – Kounde, Christensen, Garcia – Dest, Kessie, Busquets, Pedri – Dembele, Lewandowski, Raphinha.
Both formations leave the likes of Gerard Pique, Ronald Araujo, Fati, Torres, Aubameyang, Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay on the bench – underscoring the depth Xavi has to offer this season.
Can Barcelona sign players for La Liga this season?
Having assembled a top-flight squad for the 2022-23 season, Barcelona are struggling to comply with La Liga’s financial fair play rules.
An important part of these rules includes salary caps for each team based on income, with clubs not being able to register new players if they exceed these.
On August 9, The Guardian reports that Barcelona still haven’t been able to register their new players due to failure to respect the league’s financial rules.
However, the Catalan club hope to register all players ahead of the season opener against Rayo Vallecano on August 13.
Barcelona plan to sell another 25 percent of Barca Studios for €100m (£84m/$102m), which should bring them in line with La Liga salary caps.
The club are also trying to enforce the transfer of current players, with Frenkie de Jong being a player often mentioned as an option this summer.
