Bynoe-Gittens propels Dortmund to comeback win over Freiburg – Sporting Life

18-year-old Englander Jamie Bynoe-Gittens scored one goal and set up another as Borussia Dortmund beat Freiburg 3-1 on Friday, all goals coming in the last 13 minutes of the game.

As the game headed for defeat, Dortmund could once again rely on their young brigade. Bynoe-Gittens and 17-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko scored two quick goals to give the visitors a valuable three points en route to their sixth-place Bundesliga title.

The visitors dominated the early stages, with Anthony Modeste – just days after joining from 1. FC Köln in his first game for Dortmund – forming an immediate partnership with captain Marco Reus.

In the 20th minute, Reus pulled the wire on Modeste on the left side of the penalty area and forced Freiburg keeper Mark Flekken to make a save.

Modeste also had a chance right up front in the 32nd minute after a superb one-touch football from Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro, but the Portuguese cross was inches too high.

Stunned, Freiburg then flipped a switch and put pressure on the suddenly shaky Dortmund defense.

Roland Sallai was awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty area in the 33rd minute.

Dead ball specialist Vincenzo Grifo stepped up and forced a fingertip save from Gregor Kobel in goal.

Minutes later, Freiburg took the lead when ex-Dortmund defender Matthias Ginter met Michael Gregoritsch, who skilfully steered a header past Kobel into the top right corner of the goal.

– Dortmund turns to youth –

Dortmund’s England striker Jamie Bynoe-Gittens (R) runs with the ball to score 1-1 during the German first division Bundesliga soccer match between SC Freiburg and Borussia Dortmund August 12, 2022 in Freiburg im Breisgau, southwest Germany.

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic turned to youth midway through the second half, bringing in Bynoe-Gittens and Moukoko to add some power to Dortmund’s offense.

The Englishman, better known for his dribbles and assists, equalized with a stunning shot from outside the box.

While his shot was helped by a poor save from Freiburg keeper Mark Flekken, the goal spurred on Bynoe-Gittens and Dortmund

The ex-Manchester City academy player had a chance to put his side ahead after 82 minutes but was unable to control a sharp pass from Marius Wolf, who begged for the goal.

He set up Dortmund’s second just a minute later as he slalomed past several Freiburg defenders at the edge of the box before playing a no-look pass to Julian Brandt.

Brandt, who was also brought on by Terzic in the second half, found Moukoko in the penalty area and the teenager chipped in from close range.

In the 88th minute, Wolf scored the goal with a powerful shot over goalkeeper Flekken into the bottom left corner of the goal.

The game marked coach Terzic’s ninth consecutive win for Dortmund, breaking a record set a decade ago by former mentor Jurgen Klopp.

The defeat continues the poor form of Freiburg at home, the Breisgauer have now conceded 16 goals in the last six games at the Europa Park Stadium.
