Carabao Cup 1st Round live scores: Top stories, results, and upsets as teams qualify for 2nd Round draw 2022/23

After a dramatic Tuesday night with numerous upsets from lower division clubs, the first round of the Carabao Cup returns for its second real night, with 12 other English Football League teams attempting to put their names in the hat for the second round.

With four more league teams set to meet lower-tier opponents, more surprises could be on the menu, especially since last night’s clashes saw all nine second-division teams, who faced fewer opponents, lose.

Stay tuned to The Sporting News here tonight as it draws on penalties after 90 minutes of play.

Sheffield Wednesday seeks revenge against Sunderland

Two of the biggest clubs to ever play in England’s third division, Sheffield Wednesday and Sunderland, met in the League One play-off semi-finals last season.

With just over 75,000 spectators at the two games, Sunderland finally found their way out of the third tier when a last-minute goal from Patrick Roberts in the second leg at Hillsborough took the Mackems to Wembley where they beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 .

Wednesday will be all about revenge as the 1991 League Cup winners seek a much-needed cup win this season.

Coventry meets Bristol City… at Burton Albion?

One of the key storylines leading up to the 2022/23 Carabao Cup first round matches was whether the Coventry-Bristol City clash would actually take place mid-week.

The game was in doubt due to the poor condition of the pitch at the Coventry Building Society Arena, which had resulted in Sky Blues’ home game against Rotherham United at the weekend being cancelled.

However, rather than announce another postponement, the game will instead be played at Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium, an 85-mile round trip for some rather disgruntled Coventry fans!

Blackburn are aiming for their third win in three games this season

Wins over QPR and Swansea City have seen Blackburn Rovers start the 2022/23 Championship season on a strong note, already the only team to have won both games in the division so far.

Rovers will then confidently enter a League Cup first round tie with Tier Two’s Hartlepool United who, by contrast, have endured a rather memorable start to their own season. A 0-0 draw with Wimbledon at the weekend at least says the North East side have retained some face after losing 4-0 on the opening day of the season.

However, one would have to be brave to bet on the underdogs here, especially as Blackburn have survived this round of the Carabao Cup five of the last six seasons.

Carabao Cup Round One Live Scores

Coventry City 0-0 Bristol City
Blackburn Rovers 0-0 Hartlepool United
Plymouth Argyle 0-0 Peterborough United

The draw for the second round of the Carabao Cup will take place after today’s games have concluded and The Sporting News brings you the full draw tonight.
