Three bodies found and two in hospital after group disappeared in Cardiff

The actions of Gwent Police and South Wales Police following the fatal car accident in Cardiff and their search for the victims are being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Police Inspectorate announced the move to investigate the two Welsh police forces after criticism they appeared not to be taking the matter seriously.

The three found dead and two others seriously injured are said to have lain in the rubble for up to 46 hours before they were discovered.

A survivor of the fatal Cardiff crash lay injured next to her dead friends for two days before they were found, her mother said.

Eve Smith (21), Darcy Ross (21) and Rafel Jeanne (24) died after a Volkswagen Tiguan swerved off the A48(M) and crashed into trees. Sophie Russon, 20, and Shane Loughlin, 32, remain in critical condition.

Speak with The sun, Sophie Russon’s mother told how she unknowingly drove past the scene of the accident three times while looking for her daughter.

“Sophie lay 20 meters away, terrified, next to her dead friends. But I didn’t see them because of the trees and there was a dip.”

“She lay there wondering if help would ever come,” Ms Certowicz said. “She must have thought she was going to die.

“She had head injuries, so maybe she didn’t really know what was going on — at least I hope she didn’t.”

Sophie Russon, 20, and Shane Loughlin, 32, were found alive after two days of serious injuries during a police search.

Anna Certowicz, mum of Sophie, said she spent two days driving around south Wales looking for her daughter after she claimed police told her to “stop calling”. The mother said she drove past the spot where the white VW Tiguan was found three times in her frantic hunt and passed within 20 meters of the SUV hidden by trees.

She revealed that her daughter was “conscious at times” in the car after it pulled off the A48 in Cardiff and “called but no one was close enough to hear her”.
