Carlee Russell latest news: $63k donations won’t be refunded as boyfriend begs people to ‘stop bullying her’
Carlee Russell’s mom speaks up
CrimeStoppers has backed off on its pledge to return nearly $63,000 in donations to help find Carlee Russell after the 25-year-old’s kidnapping storyline came under suspicion.
Ms Russell, 25, told police she was abducted after stopping to help a toddler in diapers traveling alone on Interstate 459 on the evening of July 13. She returned home two days after the alleged kidnapping.
The two-day search for the Alabama woman raised more than $63,000. But the organization, which anonymously provides evidence of criminal activity, has now said the money will not be returned after initially promising.
Meanwhile, Alabama police have cast doubt on Ms Russell’s kidnapping allegations, revealing she appeared to have conducted suspicious internet searches into kidnappings prior to the incident.
Her friend is now asking the public to stop cyberbullying Ms Russell.
Thomar Latrell Simmons narrated The New York Post that she “doesn’t deserve” to be bullied online and urged people to think about their mental health.
“The only thing I can say is that I want everyone to stop bullying her. I know what it looks like, what she did. Just stop bullying on social media,” he said.
Advocates are imploring people not to let Carlee Russell distract them from missing people.
The story of Carlee Russell and her alleged kidnapping, or lack thereof, has taken the national media by storm.
But advocates are urging others not to let Ms Russell’s case distract them from the real issue.
“We must not lose sight of the bigger picture,” said Ms. Wilson. “We are disappointed that there are inconsistencies with her story, especially when there is a staggering number of people of color who are still missing and need our help.”
Speaking to CNN, Ms Wilson said it’s often harder to go viral with missing black people cases.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), black people make up 31 percent of missing persons reports, but only 14 percent of the US population.
Ms Wilson said she could not allow Ms Russell’s case to derail her efforts to bring other cases to attention.

Alabama police find “no evidence” that Carlee Russell tried to help a toddler on the freeway
Investigators in Alabama found “no evidence” that Carlee Russell was trying to help a toddler walking down a freeway at the time of her mysterious disappearance.
Ms. Russell, a 25-year-old nursing student, disappeared without a trace off the side of the road off Interstate 459 in Hoover on the night of July 13 — just moments after she called 911 and told her she had spotted an infant alone on the road.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found Ms Russell’s car was still running and her cellphone and wig were nearby, but no sign of the 25-year-old or an infant.
Hoover Police have expressed doubts, saying there was no evidence a toddler ever walked down the freeway that night.
Although Ms Russell claimed an infant walked alone and barefoot down a busy motorway, no other motorist reported seeing an infant.

Carlee Russell’s internet research
Carlee Russell conducted a series of suspicious Internet searches in the days leading up to her allegations of being kidnapped, Alabama authorities said at a news conference last Wednesday.
A forensic analysis of Ms. Russell’s cell phone, work and home computers revealed that she was looking for information about the film out of stockAmber Alerts, booking a bus ticket from Birmingham to Nashville and “how to withdraw money from a register without getting caught,” Nicholas Derzis of the Hoover Police Department told reporters.

What Carlee Russell told the police
Police in Hoover, Alabama, said they were unable to verify most of Carlee Russell’s claims that she was abducted after pulling to the curb while reporting that an infant was walking alone, leading to questions about whether charges could be filed against her.
Ms Russell, 25, went missing on July 13 after calling 911 to report a young child was traveling alone and barefoot on Interstate 459.
In the 49 hours that Ms Russell went missing, local, state and federal agencies conducted an extensive search.
Search efforts ended on July 15 when Ms Russell returned home on foot. She claimed a man kidnapped her.
But on Wednesday, Alabama authorities said they had no evidence a toddler was walking down the freeway and could not confirm Ms Russell was kidnapped.
Hoover Police Chief Nick Derzis said no other motorist on the busy freeway had reported a child walking alone and there were no missing child alerts. He said Ms Russell was the only person to make the 911 call and when authorities arrived there was no sign of an infant.
He added that during a brief phone call to emergency services, Ms Russell claimed she had stopped her car to help the child, but phone tracking data showed she had moved 600 meters – the length of six football fields.
Mr Derzis expressed doubts that a young child between the ages of two and four could travel 600 meters during the time Ms Russell was on the phone.
Ms Russell told authorities she had been abducted and held captive by a man and woman, but Mr Derzis said they could not verify.
At this time, Hoover Police do not know the exact whereabouts of Ms Russell during the two days she was missing.
Instead, Mr Derzis referred to Ms Russell’s questionable internet search history, which she had conducted in the days and hours before her disappearance.
