City officials expecting sporting events next May to bring economic boom
The first Saturday in May, also known as the Kentucky Derby, should attract around 200,000 visitors to Derby City. Two weeks later, the PGA Championship is expected to bring even more. “Louisville knows how to host big events, welcome the world and spread our amazing hospitality. Valhalla and the PGA Championship are going to be just another epic event here in Louisville,” said Mayor Craig Greenberg. Zack Davis of the Louisville Tourism Office said they expect a big economic boost from the PGA Championship alone. “We currently estimate it will have nearly $80 million in direct economic impact. And based on the information we have from the 2014 PGA Championship that we hosted, we expect hotels will basically be about 90% hotel occupancy,” Davis said. Louisville Tourism expects im Approximately 500,000 visitors to the city over a two week period May 2024. The Kentucky Derby 150 will be held on Saturday, May 4, and the PGA Championship will be held just a week and a half later, May 13-19 Greenberg said he believes this will be a major economic event for all industries across the city.”Hotels, restaurants, businesses, even here at the city council, we’re all working with the PGA and Valhalla to make sure this is the.” best PGA championship ever,” said Greenberg. The 2023 PGA Championship was hosted in Rochester, New York. The Rochester Chamber of Commerce reported that the event had a $200 million economic impact on their city. Jimmy Kirchdorfer, co-owner of the Valhalla golf course, which hosts the PGA championship, said he hopes Louisville can do even better. “We have Kentucky hospitality all over the city here,” Kirchdorfer said. “And we know how to roll out the red carpet.” Ticket registration for the PGA Championship is still open, but not for long.
